Mark DeBoben Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jun. 17, 2022.
Mark Christopher DeBoben, 57, passed away on May 20, 2022, in Marietta, GA. Mark was born in West Point, New York, on March 5, 1965, to Louis DeBoben and Dolores Boylan DeBoben.

He was predeceased by his parents, and his beloved sister, Debra Mock, and nephew, Michael Petrizzo.

Survivors include three children who were the light of his life: Lauren of Atlanta, GA; Zachary of Kernersville, NC; and Marlena of Seffner, FL; as well as his grandson, JaKoby, of Kernersville.

Other survivors include siblings Patricia Petrizzo (Michael), Live Oak, FL; Carol Rost (Barry), Pearl River, NY; Kurt DeBoben (Camille), Fort Pierce, FL; Christine Pennington (Jimmy), Palm Bay, FL; nieces and nephews, Adam Petrizzo (Doarung), Jordan Rost (Romy), Danielle Mock Lisowy (Jason), Christopher Mock, J. J. Pennington, Nikki Pennington; several grand nieces and nephews, and several cousins.

Mark attended local schools in Brevard County, graduating from Melbourne High in 1983. Then it was on to the University of Florida where, despite boisterous opposition from his Seminole relatives, he became a life-long Gator and ardent fan of Steve Spurrier! Mark treasured the friends he made during these years.

Graduating in 1987, he embarked on a long career in finance, working in the retail, banking, and legal fields. His first "real" job was for Sears, Roebuck in Jacksonville, FL, then on to Chicago, the first of many moves pursuing a career he enjoyed. Nothing was more exciting to him than a meticulously executed spreadsheet...unless it was also color-coded! He leaves behind many fondly remembered colleagues around the country.

While Mark's early years were spent in New Jersey, the family moved to Florida in the 1970's where his love of the ocean began. As a teenager, he was a lifeguard in Melbourne Beach and recently called it the best job he ever had! In land-locked Orlando, he lugged two large potted palm trees up three flights of stairs to his apartment balcony, enjoying the sunsets as the palms rustled in the breeze.

In March, he texted us "I am a Florida boy. One of these days I'm back." His family is brokenhearted that he is coming home this way.

A private celebration of life will be held on a future date.

Donations in Mark's memory may be made to: Second Harvest Food Bank of Central Florida, 411 Mercy Drive, Orlando, FL, 32805; 407-295-1066.

Hard to believe it was 24 years ago when I first met you at my niece’s birthday party. What a pleasure and privilege it was to work for you 3 times in 3 totally different industries. You set me on a path that taught me so much with a simple entry level collection’s job.
Without your willingness to give me an opportunity, I would not be where I am today.
Thank you for giving me the confidence to aim high! After a lengthy layoff, we landed in a director’s role at Therapy Brands. Started out with just ABA customers and in just 6 weeks, they added Mental Health customers to my portfolio.
Looking forward to making a difference for greater healthcare outcomes in your memory my friend.
Glad you are now in the fullness of joy with Jesus! Love you Mark and continued prayers for peace and comfort for your family.

One of the suggestions on the top of the post is to describe something that reminds me of you. Every time I stop and reflect on my life´s journey I am reminded of just how different it would have been without you. God´s plans never change and before I was even created, He knew when and where and the perfect time to bring you into my life. God used you to set me on a course far better than I could ever imagine or have prayed for. Thanks to the 2 most amazing women and heroes in our lives, and their friendship, you gave me my first job out of college in collections in 1999 at Intermedia Communications. When my sister told me to call the temp agency, I remember I was excited for about 2 minutes and then realized you were hiring me for collections. I realized I am not big enough to break anyone´s legs to collect money and was hesitant to be 1 of those debt collectors. I quickly learned the majority of past due balances are tied to some sort of billing or service issue. I learned to build relationships in B2B to resolve discrepancies and collect undisputed balances. It was actually quite exciting. With your guidance I got pretty good at it and you blessed me with the opportunity to take what I learned into 2 more industries. Whenever layoffs were pending, you always saw the writing on the wall and got another job before layoffs. That actually worked out very well for me because I always had my next opportunity without being unemployed. The last time I had the privilege of working under you was in 2007, when I moved on before you to project coordinator. I still remember how you tried to counter offer the opportunity and it wasn´t about money but this time it was about my growth. I even remember you saying, you could block the transfer. To which I replied, what we both knew, which was you would never stop me from doing what was best for me. It wasn´t long after that when you left for a next opportunity. Even though project coordinator got me to project manager and then Enterprise Account Manager, there was always a part of me that hoped you would call me one more time to come somewhere the AR was a mess and staff needed motivation to pick up the phone. To hear you left us way too early made me realize you had already provided me with what I needed to be successful. I find myself once again having been laid off. I have a few different opportunities that are still possible in either project management or client success using all the skills I have learned from all the doors God used you to open in my life. Tomorrow morning I have an initial interview for an opportunity to be the Manager of Collections and Cash Applications in healthcare software. There are absolutely a lot of great experiences and skills I have learned to make me qualified but definitely some skills I will need to brush up on. Even if it doesn´t work out just the fact that I am getting an initial interview reminds me your still guiding me. Thank you for believing in me! How many people can say they had the honor of working for the same great mentor and friend 3 times? Triple blessed! My prayer is to 1 day get to hire at least 1 person out of college so I can pass the baton to them in hopes that I can share your great legacy with the next generation! No matter what comes next, you have already been part of changing thousands of lives of providers and patients by putting me in a place to be part of multiple teams bringing better healthcare outcomes. Until we meet again, I will keep your family in prayer and always remember how blessed my family´s life is because you were a part of it.
