Mark Fraser Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Feb. 18 to Feb. 25, 2023.
Mark Wayne Fraser August 5, 1952 - February 12, 2023 Newtown, CT ? Mark Fraser passed away on February 12th, 2023, after a long illness. Mark was the son of the late Waymon "Nick" Fraser and Mary "Jodi" Fraser of Rye, NY.

Mark was born at the Good Samaritan Hospital in Los Angeles, CA, on August 5th, 1952. The family moved to the New York City area soon after. Raised in Rye, NY, Mark attended Osborn Elementary School. He went on to attend The Governor's Academy in Byfield, MA, with which he had a profound, life-long connection. He graduated in 1971.

After receiving a BA from Hamilton College in 1975, he attended the University of Missouri Graduate School of Journalism in Colombia, MO, graduating in 1977. He began his journalism career with The Kansas City Star where his team earned a Pulitzer Prize for its reporting on the Hyatt Regency Hotel overhead walkway collapse and where he often contributed to The New York Times as a regional correspondent. Mark lived in Kansas City from 1978 until 1987. Following a return to the New York City area, Mark held a variety of publishing positions at Fairchild Publications and Reed Elsevier. It was at the latter that he developed a keen interest in and traveled frequently to China.

Having been greatly impacted by past professors, Mark's other career interest was in education. He received his Master's Degree in Education from Manhattanville College in August 2010 and taught at several schools, including the Thornton Donovan School, until developing early onset Alzheimer's.

During his life, Mark's passions included playing trumpet, writing, fly-fishing, and sailing. He served at Larchmont Avenue Church and pursued his love of sailing at the Larchmont Yacht Club. Family trips aboard the Lazy Bones were some of his fondest memories. He loved his children dearly and took pride in supporting their education and extracurricular activities.

Mark is survived by his sister, Gail R. Fraser of Highlands Ranch, CO; his son, Nick Fraser and daughter-in-law, Tara Willinger Purasson of Montclair, NJ; and his daughter, Emily Fraser of Asheville, NC.

His family would like to thank those who cared for Mark in various ways toward the end of his life including; Pam and Arthur Washington, Homayoun "Homey" Tahvildari, Newtown Rehabilitation and Health Care Center in Newtown, CT, and his sister, Gail. If you would like to donate in Mark's honor, he would love for you to support the Rye Nature Center in Rye, NY. A celebration of Mark's life will be held this summer in New York.

I am proud to have been a friend of Mark Fraser's in Kansas City, MO in 1979-80. He was smart as a whip and he was an excellent tennis player too. We were both at the newspaper and, now that I think of it, both a bit at sea during that time as well. Mark looked out for me in his way and I will forever recall him with great fondness. My heartfelt condolences to his family. - Jim Keenan

Sophomore year, Mark had the room next to mine in Boynton House, a dormitory at the Governors Academy. He was a great friend and, as class agent, I had many great conservations with Mark over the years as I followed his life and career after college. Of all my memories of Mark , one stands out. Our senior year, Mark and I were invited to attend the June Board of Trustees meeting at the Harvard Club in Boston where the board would be discussing making the Academy co-educational. The matter had been discussed previously, but not resolved, and they wanted student input. When the topic came up for discussion, the president went around the table seeking the opinion of each trustee as well as that of the two students present. All agreed the school should become co-educational but when was, once again, left undecided. As the president proceeded to move to the next agenda item, Mark spoke up. With a forthrightness that anticipated his career in journalism, and acknowledging that co-education had been addressed at previous meetings, he essentially asked the room why the issue continued to remain unresolved as to timing. When would they decide to initiate co-education at the Academy? A silence fell over the room as trustees, feeling shocked and a little chagrined, looked at one another. Finally, the president called the question: should the school prepare to become co-educational in the fall or wait another year. A show of hands favored adopting the move to begin in the fall, someone stated it as a motion which was then quickly seconded.
So at the 1971 June meeting of the board of trustees, Mark Fraser, a graduating senior, had essentially initiated co-education at Governor Dummer Academy, which celebrated its 50th anniversary of admitting girls this past year. Rest in peace, Mark. You are missed.
