I am proud to have been a friend of Mark Fraser's in Kansas City, MO in 1979-80. He was smart as a whip and he was an excellent tennis player too. We were both at the newspaper and, now that I think of it, both a bit at sea during that time as well. Mark looked out for me in his way and I will forever recall him with great fondness. My heartfelt condolences to his family. - Jim Keenan

Sophomore year, Mark had the room next to mine in Boynton House, a dormitory at the Governors Academy. He was a great friend and, as class agent, I had many great conservations with Mark over the years as I followed his life and career after college. Of all my memories of Mark , one stands out. Our senior year, Mark and I were invited to attend the June Board of Trustees meeting at the Harvard Club in Boston where the board would be discussing making the Academy co-educational. The matter had been discussed previously, but not resolved, and they wanted student input. When the topic came up for discussion, the president went around the table seeking the opinion of each trustee as well as that of the two students present. All agreed the school should become co-educational but when was, once again, left undecided. As the president proceeded to move to the next agenda item, Mark spoke up. With a forthrightness that anticipated his career in journalism, and acknowledging that co-education had been addressed at previous meetings, he essentially asked the room why the issue continued to remain unresolved as to timing. When would they decide to initiate co-education at the Academy? A silence fell over the room as trustees, feeling shocked and a little chagrined, looked at one another. Finally, the president called the question: should the school prepare to become co-educational in the fall or wait another year. A show of hands favored adopting the move to begin in the fall, someone stated it as a motion which was then quickly seconded.
So at the 1971 June meeting of the board of trustees, Mark Fraser, a graduating senior, had essentially initiated co-education at Governor Dummer Academy, which celebrated its 50th anniversary of admitting girls this past year. Rest in peace, Mark. You are missed.
