Mark Gholston Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 27, 2013.
Funeral services for Mark Gholston will be conducted Wednesday, October 2, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. from the Martin Funeral Chapel of Elk City with interment at the Calvary Cemetery under the direction of the Martin Funeral Home. Mark Green Gholston was born November 24, 1953 in Clinton, Oklahoma to George and Mildred (Green) Gholston and passed from the arms of his loving family to the Lord from OU Medical Center on Friday, September 27, 2013. Mark began school in Clinton until his family relocated to Elk City in 1963. He enjoyed football until his heart was stolen by his high school sweetheart, Maudy Word. Mark and Maudy married on May 28, 1971 in Shamrock, Texas. They made their home in Elk City and he graduated from Elk City High School in 1972. They were blessed with their son Shawn Mark Gholston in August, 1972, and their daughter Amanda Marie in February, 1977. Upon graduation, Mark worked various jobs until breaking out in the oilfield. He went to work for the Shell Corporation in 1979, working his way up to company man. Although Mark's career took them to Houston, Texas, and to Clinton, they returned to their Elk City home in 1987. Following his early retirement in 1995, Mark pursued his true passion in farming and ranching at Foss, Oklahoma. A lover of the great outdoors, his hobbies were farming, road hunting and fishing. Never one to quit a garment over a little age, Mark was rarely seen outside his signature overalls and denim shirts. With eyes the color of the beautiful blue sky, Mark was able to give the gift of vision through donation in his death. He was known by friends simply as Pops. Mark was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his wife Maudy Gholston of their Elk City home, son Shawn Gholston of Elk City, daughter Mandy Wehrenberg and husband Steve of Mustang, Oklahoma, daughter-in-law Keeley Rohrberg of Elk City, in-laws Orville and Teresa Word of Elk City, brother Toot Gholston and wife Debra of Elk City, grandchildren Celeste Hutson of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, Carissa Gholston and boyfriend Steven Ferguson of Elk City, Hunter, Baylor and Tanner Gholston of Elk City and Danee and Beckett Wehrenberg of Mustang, Oklahoma, special friend Doug Stewart of Foss, Oklahoma, and lifelong friend Red Miller of Edmond, Oklahoma, as well as his beloved Jack Russell terriers Scooter and Tally.
