Mark was born June 2, 1960 in Davenport, the beloved son of David J. and Joann M. (Shoemaker) Kakert. Mark graduated from Assumption High School in 1978. He started his career with the Davenport Fire Department on May 11, 1987. On July 5, 1994 he was promoted to Engineer and was later promoted to Lieutenant on February 21, 1999. He was also a recipient of the Fireman of the Year Award.
Mark served as a first responder EMT and served on the Hazmat Team. He was deeply devoted in educating people with The Fire Prevention Bureau and was glad to assist with anything related to the Scott County Sheriff's Reserve Unit. He formerly owned and operated American Homestead Builders.

He was a lifetime member of the Boy Scouts of America, including the Explorer Scouts Division and was honored to be a 4th Degree Knight of the Knights of Columbus.

Family was of the utmost importance to Mark. He dearly loved spending time with his daughters and grandchildren. He never missed any of their events. He was a die hard Chicago Cubs fan and enjoyed traveling with his close friend. He had a passion for cars and mortorcycles, old and new. His other hobbies included woodworking; home remodeling; golf and trivia nights. He knew everyone and was a mentor to many people; having nicknames for each.

Those left to continue his legacy include his daughters: Melissa (Brad) Kakert Mussmann, Davenport; Caitlin Kakert, Moline and Laura Kakert, Davenport; grandchildren: Gage Bradley Mussmann and Falyn Marie Mussmann; his mother, Joann, Bettendorf; siblings: Michael (Judy) Kakert, Blue Grass, Beth (Alvin) Sindt, Davenport, Matthew (Amy) Kakert, Bettendorf; Theresa (Mark) Levsen, LeClaire, Patrick (Jody) Kakert, Davenport and Joseph (Kelly) Kakert, Davis Junction, IL; 28 nieces and nephews and several aunts, uncles and cousins. On behalf of the Conklin Family I want to express our sincere and heartfelt condolences to the Kakert Family on the loss of Mark. All I know for sure is that Mark was a great guy and, simply put, he wanted to be the consummate professional firefighter. With that said, job well done Mark ... and then some. We're all better people for having known you and, for some of us, for having worked with you. RIP good and faithful servant!

Mark's death has not only left a huge void with his family, but the Greater Davenport Community as a whole. His work in Public Safety Prevention and his love for mankind cannot go unnoticed. Mark's work with Injury Prevention, Child Passenger Safety, Operation Prom Night, his extensive love for Fire Prevention showed the community and the State of Iowa that lives could be saved through prevention efforts. He impacted the lives of countless people, keeping them safe through his unstoppable passion.

Mark was a loving father and grandpa, an outstanding friend, co-worker and member of the Davenport Fire Department family. We will take it from here Mark. God Bless 518 and his family!

Beverly and I extend our condolences to Marks' family. He was an asset to the DFD every day and will be missed. He provided a service to the people of Davenport that was designed to inform and protect them. Such a service is of great value and his successor has big boots to fill.

Beth, Alvin and family-- I am so sorry to hear of the death of your brother, Mark. The times we've traveled to eastern Iowa to visit my sister Mary, and her husband Mark, it's always seemed as if her extended family became mine, and when one family member grieves we all grieve. May your good memories with your brother, and your trust in God's perfect love sustain you in the days ahead.

I have been friends with Mark for over thirty years. I can tell you that he truly loved being a firefighter and cared for this community. Mark had a wonderful sense of humor and was always ready to help his friends. Mark's passing has left a void in many lives, including my own. I seek solace in the fact that Mark and I will be able to ride Harleys and go to stock car races some day in heaven. May God speed Mark's journey to his reserved place in heaven. Goodbye for now, buddy. Gary W. Smith
