Mark LASSITER Obituary

Published by Richmond Times-Dispatch from Jun. 22 to Jun. 23, 2011.
LASSITER, Mark R., 57, died Monday, June 20, 2011. A native of Hampton, Va., he had been a Richmond resident for the last 16 years. A graduate of Hampton High School, who later earned his bachelor's degree from Randolph-Macon College, he was a member of Phi Delta Theta Fraternity. Mark was a valued employee of the Social Security Administration for 35 years, described by the Commissioner as "a wonderful and witty person who passionately protected this agency." He had been working as the Press Officer in Baltimore, Md. A trivia and sports fanatic, he enjoyed playing golf and loved the Washington Redskins, but his passion was an annual gathering of 15 of his closest friends for a golf tournament known as "The Roll," which celebrated its 32nd anniversary this past May. He was preceded in death by his father, Raymond Lassiter; and uncle, Edsel Langston. Survivors include his wife of 35 years, Nancy Lassiter; son, Tyler Lassiter of Atlanta, Ga.; daughter, Brooke Lassiter of Baltimore, Md.; mother, Geraldine Langston Lassiter; brother, Thomas Lassiter and his wife, Elizabeth, of Clermont, Fla.; niece, Brittany Lassiter; three aunts, Hazel Langston and Olive Deladurantaye, both of Hampton, and Jean Taylor of Missouri; uncle, Robert Langston, also of Missouri; cousin, Yolande Snead and her husband, Danny, and their children, Lucy Snead and Maria Thomas; mother-in-law, Frances Musolino; sisters-in-law, Emma Doane and Carol Welch; brother-in-law, Mike Welch, all from Canandaigua, N.Y.; sister and brother-in-law, Fran and Jack Jenkins of Hampton, Virginia; and a host of other cherished friends and family. He will also be missed by his grandpuppy, Obi, his Saturday morning driving companion. A memorial service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday, June 23, 2011, at Central United Methodist Church, 225 Chapel Street, Hampton, Va., by Rev. Cheryl Harrison-Davidson. Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association, P.O. Box 5216, Glen Allen, Va. 23058. Arrangements by R. Hayden Smith Funeral Home.

Nancy,
I was so saddened to learn of Mark's untimely passing. He surely had many friends and co-workers who loved and respected him. I worked with Mark's mother at Booker School and remember fondly how lovingly she spoke of her boys. You, Nancy, took over my 5th grade classroom for a few weeks in the fall of 1976. My heart goes out to you and your children.

I worked with Mark on occasion in recent years, and although I didn't know him on a personal level, I always appreciated his genuine nature and professionalism. Unfortunately I can't say much about who Mark was, but I can tell you quite a bit about who he wasn't. He wasn't pretentious or difficult. He wasn't hard to work with or unappreciative in demeanor. He wasn't insincere with his words or affected in his manner. Mark always struck me as a talented and unassuming man, who was genuinely committed to his country and whose laid-back delivery of the "story of the day" almost fooled you into thinking he wasn't a step ahead of you. Mark earned your respect & approval without ever giving you the impression that he really needed it. Mark always struck me as a good man, and when everything is said and done, isn't that what matters most?

My uncle Mark, also my God Father, was the most loving, caring, outstanding man. I will truely miss him very much. But not a day will go by that he wont be in my thoughts and in my heart. I loved him very much and always will. I miss you soo much <3

I was one of Mark’s instructors when he began his career with the Social Security Administration. We both changed job locations many times over the years but frequently crossed paths and remained friends. I last saw Mark when I was working at the SSA office in Midlothian, VA. He always greeted me with that smile. I still have a photograph taken so many years ago of Mark with the class and instructors. I can still see his smile in that photograph. I was surprised to find he has left us so soon. He spent his life helping others. He did his job well and I am proud of him for that. To Mark’s family I wish to express my deepest sympathy. May Our Lord, Jesus Christ, be with you now and remain with you always.
