Mark Thompson Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Nov. 5 to Nov. 9, 2023.
Sherrills Ford - Mark Allen Thompson-caring husband, father, son, brother and friend-passed away on November 2, 2023 in Charlotte, NC at the age of 60, surrounded by his loving family and close friends.

Mark made a lasting impression on all those who knew him-from his welcoming and open heart, curious mind and warm sense of humor, he was simply one of a kind. With his high school sweetheart, best friend and life partner Nancy (née Myers), Mark had four children who adored him. They, together with their partners, will carry on his legacy of generosity, love and support of family and kindness: daughter Jessica and her husband Alexander Schaper (Brooklyn, NY); son Kurt and his partner Sierra Makepeace (Tacoma, WA); daughter Rachel and her fiancé Kyle Laffey (Pacifica, CA); and daughter Olivia and her fiancé Rico Billups (Smyrna, GA).

Mark was born on March 11, 1963 and grew up in Yorkville, IL with his late father Daryl Thompson, mother Karel Thompson (Oswego, IL) and sister Janis Labroo (Oneonta, NY). Mark had a special relationship with his stepmother Mary Jo Savol (Geneva, IL), as well as his brothers-in-law and their families. Mark was a lifelong sports lover, football in particular, and remained a loyal Chicago Bears fan through thick and thin. He and Nancy enjoyed playing golf together and Mark supported Nancy's love of tennis-they often traveled to play new golf courses and watch professional tennis matches.

During his 30-year career with Caterpillar, Mark took international assignments in Belgium, Switzerland and Hong Kong, affording him and his family incredible experiences that shaped their lives. He developed a deep passion for food and wine, and was always the go-to source for a restaurant recommendation, whether a neighborhood BBQ joint or a fine dining establishment in New York City or Paris. As a history buff and skilled researcher, Mark committed considerable time and effort to genealogy. In 2021, he self-published a book about Nancy's father's ancestry and had recently finished a second book about his father's lineage.

For the past year, Mark had been battling Myelodysplastic Syndrome EB2. He underwent several rounds of chemotherapy and had a bone marrow transplant in April 2023. After months of hard-fought recovery, he was feeling his best since before starting treatment when in October, he unexpectedly went into cardiac arrest, which he survived. However, a few days later he developed pneumonia, from which he ultimately was unable to recover. Until the end he was lifted up by Nancy's unwavering devotion and love, as well as the support of his family and community. We will forever cherish his memory and every precious minute we had with him.

We will not be holding a service but please visit his site at caringbridge.com to share your favorite memories of Mark. In lieu of flowers, donations in Mark's honor can be made to Be The Match and World Central Kitchen.

Oh goodness. Mark's passing is shocking and heartbreaking. The world's light is a bit dimmer without M.A.T in it. He was the best, most respectful, diplomatic, intelligent, laid back leader I have ever had and probably will ever have. He treated me like I wasn't a lowly assistant. We had conversations about restaurants, wine, sometimes sports - but not often about sports because I couldn't hold a candle to that subject. He was an advisor to me when I was retiring and for such a big step in life, he put both my mind and my husband, Ray's mind more at ease. Golly this loss is sad.
Nancy, Jessica+, Kurt+, Rachel+ and Olivia+ your in my prayers for strength. I am sending extra hugs your way. -Christine Needham.

Amy and I are very sorry to hear of Mark´s passing. Mark started his career at Caterpillar one month after I did. We became good work colleagues and friends from the start. Over the years, our careers intersected many times in many different locations across the globe. Because we were both tutored by Jim Cromer early in our career, we always felt like we had a unique connection. I always knew if I needed help with something, I could turn to Mark, and I think he knew the same about me. Mark was the true definition of an inspirational leader that anyone and everyone wanted to follow.

While I have many stories about Mark, the one I will remember and cherish the most is the day he retired from Caterpillar. On that day, he left a letter and a rock on my desk. The letter was typical Mark. In short, it said that he was not one for goodbyes or farewells, so he decided to leave me a letter expressing his thanks for all of the years we had worked together as close colleagues and friends. The letter went on to explain the rock. While in Aurora, Jim Cromer and Mark has been working with one of Jim´s peers. The peer had told Jim to "stop giving estimates and start giving hard numbers". So, Jim went into his back yard, found a rock, and in red paint, he put onto the rock several numbers and inscribed the phrase: "Hard Numbers". Jim proceeded to put the rock on the desk of his peer the next morning along with a message saying "he could use this as his `hard numbers´, until they were ready to give more than estimates." Eventually, Jim got the rock back from his peer. As Jim transitioned into retirement, he gave the rock to Mark to remember him by. Well, as Mark transitioned into retirement, he gave the rock to me and asked that I use it to remember him and the tutoring we had both received from our mentor (Jim Cromer). I still have the rock and will cherish the memories that it brings back to me about Mark each time I look at it.

My heart goes out to Mark´s family and close friends. I knew Mark as a co-worker, boss, mentor, and as a friend. I benefited from his wisdom throughout my career and always looked forward to working with him on anything we did. His positive attitude in any situation was a source of inspiration for me and others. Mark was one of those unique people that brought out the best in others.

I remember Mark from being his accounting teacher in high school. He was a great student and I am sorry that his life has been taken at such a young age. He certainly impressed me and I knew he would seek knowledge and show appreciation for every one he met.

Oh Nancy, Mark was a fun, kind person. He lit up the room when he walked in.
It was so fun to play Trivia with you both and I especially loved when Mark would throw his head back and Whoop when we answered a tough question correctly.
He was so inclusive and caring and I am glad I knew him.

My heart goes out to you and your family. Take good care. Mark will be missed by many.

Here is a photo of you at my Mom´s 90th birthday party. I enjoyed our times together.

May your happy memories help you through these days ahead.

Love from Becky Pence

There are so many memories, butTom and I would like to share some of our favorite ones of Mark. The four of us renewed our vows in Las Vegas-in a pink Cadillac! We will never forget our first Michelin rated restaurant at Le Cygne in Geneva, Switzerland, and finally when the four of us returned from Asia we started our own bowling league in Peoria-with matching shirts of course. We will always cherish the many special times we had with Mark and how he touched our lives. Lynne and Tom Doolittle

We were lucky enough to spend two amazing long summer weekends with Mark and Nancy at their home. We enjoyed some of Mark's famous BBQ and low country boils, had fun on the boat, played board games, and even sang karaoke until the night got late. We feel so lucky to have been welcomed into the Thompson home and spend such quality time (filled with laughs) with Mark, he truly was an amazing person. Sending our deepest condolences to you Nancy, Jess and the rest of the family.
