Mark Van Note Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jun. 24, 2025.
Mark Harold Van Note, age 75, of Walpole, NH, died peacefully at his home on June 8, 2025. Mark was born on September 22, 1949 in Neptune, NJ and was raised in Ocean Township, NJ. A bright and driven student, he was a member of the first graduating class at Ocean Township High School, where he was the first editor of the school's yearbook, Sandpiper, in 1967.

Mark attended the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), where he was a member of Theta Delta Chi fraternity. He originally pursued physics at MIT, but ultimately earned degrees in Architecture and Philosophy. Mark later earned a master's degree in Occupational Therapy from Boston University and a second master's degree in Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence from Pratt Institute.

Mark dedicated his life to helping others and exploring new ideas. He worked as an occupational therapist in NYC and later as a programmer/analyst at Fidelity Investments in Boston. Mark was a multidisciplinary artist working in stained glass, pottery, painting and drawing. He brought his artistic style to everything: his cooking, baking, gardening, hosting (especially his Full Moon parties) and to his unique, beloved home in Walpole.

Mark was predeceased by his parents, Robert Harold and Bertha (Specht) Van Note. He is survived by his siblings: Frank Roger Van Note (Elaine) of Longs, SC, Joy Hermsen (Eric) of Farmingdale, NJ, Lance Van Note of Ocean, NJ, and Diane Galuppo (Frank) of Farmingdale, NJ. He was Uncle Mark to six nieces and eight great-nieces and nephews. Mark also leaves behind numerous dear friends who were his family.

The loss of so many friends during the 1990's due to AIDS shaped him in profound ways, fostering in him a deep empathy and dedication to supporting others. His memory will live on in the lives he touched, the knowledge he shared, and the love he gave so generously. A memorial service will be held at a later date.

"In one of those stars I shall be living. In one of them I shall be laughing. And so it will be as if all the stars were laughing, when you look at the sky at night. And when your sorrow is comforted...you will be content that you have known me."

-Antoine de Saint-Exupery, The Little Prince

My friend, of many years, a curmudgeon at best, we argued over inane topics, he inspired me, he encouraged me, we learned so much from each other, he was a man of many poetic/artistic/humanistic talents, he was both deep and not, carefree and deeply caring, I will miss you Mark VN, he was a rare creature and this world lost something beautiful. I can't wait to see you again.

Will miss my neighbor, he was always a joy to talk with. Always laughing. Hard to wrap my brain around this loss.

You are truly missed in many ways because you got there first.
May you rest in peace.
