RUTLAND TOWN - Marshall B. Fish, 86, of Rutland Town died Sunday October 4, 2015 at Rutland Regional Medical Center.
He was born October 14, 1928 in the home he still resides in on Prospect Hill Rd. the son of Wallace and Vera (Roberts) Fish.
Marshall graduated from Barstow High School and on November 19, 1949 he married Hilda (Fallon) Fish.
Marshall began working on Rutland Town Roads in 1946 as a truck driver and laborer for 65 cents an hour, with his father, the road commissioner for 30 years. His grandfather Marshall Benjamin Fish also held the office of Rutland Town Road Commissioner in the early 1920s, thus making Marshall the third generation to hold this position.
Marshall was appointed Road Commissioner in June 1964 until 1980. He was re-elected in 1983 a position he held to present, a total of 51 years of dedicated service to the town.
Marshall has taken much pride in building and maintaining many miles of Town roads over the years while working on his family Dairy Farm for many years and still enjoys maintaining a small number of farm animals.
He was a member of the Rutland County Agricultural Society/Fair Association, the Republican National Committee and Ducks Unlimited. In his younger years he was very active in the 4-H Club.
He enjoyed attending Sunday evening band concerts in the city park.
When Marshall became ill it was his wish to remain in the home he was born in. He was lovingly cared for by his daughter Susan and his son-in-law Jeffrey. His faithful cat Oliver remained by his side
Surviving are his wife Hilda of Rutland Town, his daughter Susan Fish Colomb and husband Jeffrey of Rutland Town, three grandchildren, Kaitlin Grote and husband Jason of Rutland Town, Darren S. Colomb of South Burlington and Damien Diette of Chester.
He was pre-deceased by a daughter Debra K. Fish Diette.
Funeral services will be held Saturday October 10, 2015 at 1:00 p.m. at Clifford Funeral Home in Rutland. Burial will follow in Evergreen Cemetery.
