Martha was born in
Princeton, West Virginia on December 26, 1937 to Samuel and Irma Evans who preceded her in death. She is survived by her only sibling, Sarah, her husband, Dr. Mitchell Allan and their daughter Susan.
She is also survived by her devoted husband of 40 yrs, Dr. William R. (Bill) Adkins; her daughter, Diane Headings (Lauren) and her children-by-marriage, Marc Adkins, Betsy Ingle (Skip), Christy Robertson (Steve), Jeannie Adkins, Jack Adkins (Michalle), and Richard Adkins (Christine).
"Grandmama's" crown are eight beautiful grandchildren: (Sara - 'SaraBeth' as Grandmama called her), Allison, Rachel, Johnny, Lilia, Colette, Will and Nicholas) and one great-grandson, Jett. Martha did not get to meet her beautiful great grandson but surely would have squealed in sheer delight had she met this sweet bundle of joy (as she did with all of her grand-kids!).
Martha grew up in West Virginia and was involved in many school activities. She played a mean game of tennis in high school, was a cheerleader and, of course, had a huge love of music. She played the piano and ended her high school years giving a senior piano recital in her church. She learned to play the organ and treasured hearing the organ playing at First Baptist Church, West Palm Beach. She would go on to major in music at Wake Forest University. This would be a stepping stone for her life ahead because music always played a huge part in who she was.
She taught music at Rosarian Academy here in West Palm Beach for several years. If you knew Martha, you knew how much she enjoyed music. She would often be singing a tune to herself as she went about her daily activities. Many who grew up at First Baptist Church of West Palm Beach knew Martha as she taught four and five year old children choirs.
She sang solos every now and then for Sunday morning worship. One of her greatest enjoyments at church was singing in the First Baptist Church choir under the direction of OD Hall as well as Bill Keith. Over the years, she found great joy in participating in the Singing Christmas Tree productions. Even as she grew ill with Alzheimer's Disease, she would sit and listen, singing along to the recordings of the Singing Christmas Tree. Martha was very involved in her church growing up as a GA (Girls in Action). She completed the steps to eventually become Queen Regent. It is no wonder that Martha was so heavily involved in WMU (Women's Missionary Union) which eventually became Women on Mission. She was energetic and was always able get so much done that needed to be done especially in these organizations and music programs. She also headed up the senior adult Sunday School class.
She was a strong partner to her husband, Dr.Bill Adkins, as they were involved in many charitable organizations in the Palm Beaches, Including CARP, Inc and the Community Health Center. She and husband, Bill, traveled the world as they loved these fabulous adventures together. In 2013, she was excited about traveling to Alaska but Bill was not so enthused about this. They ended up going with a group from church and three grand-daughters. This trip since then has been considered as one of their all-time favorite places they had visited.
Martha's greatest love (even above her crazy love for her husband) was for her Savior. Martha was often up late at night studying her Bible. Her life was lived serving her Lord. She was confident that one day she would be with Him forever. She is whole now in the presence of her Savior. She is singing and worshiping the Lord...she is HOME!
This was one of Martha's favorite Psalms, from chapter 103
15
The life of mortals is like grass,
they flourish like a flower of the field;
16
the wind blows over it and it is gone,
and its place remembers it no more.
17
But from everlasting to everlasting
the Lord's love is with those who fear him,
and his righteousness with their children's children-
18
with those who keep his covenant
and remember to obey his precepts.
19
The Lord has established his throne in heaven,
and his kingdom rules over all.
20
Praise the Lord, you his angels,
you mighty ones who do his bidding,
who obey his word.
21
Praise the Lord, all his heavenly hosts,
you his servants who do his will.
22
Praise the Lord, all his works
everywhere in his dominion.
Praise the Lord, my soul.
