I have known Martha for over 50 years when she was the understanding, long-suffering mother of a teenager. The

Bells had a beautiful home on South Street in Chardon, and Sally was encouraged to host parties. Martha was egalitarian in that she insisted Sally invite everyone to the parties (no favorites), and my sister and I (who lived 4 miles out of town on a farm) were part of the festivities. The Bells subsequently moved to a larger home on Basquin Drive with a rec room and bar, and the boys got invited to the parties, too. Whereas Martha had slept through Sally's all-female pajama parties, Martha was a little more alert when the boys showed up. Nevertheless, the Bell parties were the highlight of the Chardon High School social life.

In our senior year, most of us thought we'd live in Chardon forever and marry farmers. Martha loaded a bunch of us in her station wagon and took us to Columbus to see where Sally woudl be attending college. We came home enrolled. That was the turning point in my life.

When I grew up and had a single daugther of my own, I tried to emulate Martha. I succeeeded somewhat, but never as well as Martha. She was the epitome of the perfect Mom.

Dear Sally and Family,

I am so sorry to read about Martha. She has been a part of my life for so long, and I loved her very much. At least we know she is in heaven baking Ham that rhubarb pie in the long pie pan.

Love to you all. I wish I was there.

I feel a great sense of loss. Martha (and Sally) displayed extraordinary kindness and generosity in helping guide the life of the woman who became my wife some 43 years ago. I will never forget her thoughtfulness.
