Martha Evans Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 10, 2024.
Martha Jean Evans, affectionately known as Martha-Jean, passed away on September 5, 2024, in Atlanta, Georgia, at the age of 69. Born October 21, 1954, in Taliaferro County, Crawfordville, Georgia, she lived a vibrant life characterized by her spirited personality and deep-rooted love for family and friends.

Martha graduated from Taliaferro County High School in 1972 and soon made her way to Atlanta, where she would spend many years serving as a cherished waitress at Mary Mac's Tea Room. Known for her impeccable service and engaging demeanor, Martha-Jean formed lasting relationships with both colleagues and guests, enhancing her life with friendships that mirrored family.

Her commitment to faith was evident in her active participation at Little Rock Baptist Church in East Atlanta, where she was a beloved member of the community.

Martha's life as daughter; sister; cousin; friend; aunt; wife; mother; and grandmother was a testament to her love of enjoyment and celebration. She was a true Southern Belle who embraced life with zeal-whether dancing, singing, or simply being in her beautiful, comforting- welcoming home. Her favorite song, "Young Hearts Run Free" by Candy Staton, was a staple at any gathering and is fondly remembered as the soundtrack to many cherished moments.

A fashion enthusiast, Martha-Jean took pleasure in dressing in the finest fabrics and cruising around Atlanta listening to soulful classics. Her hobbies also included playing the Georgia Lottery, watching football, gardening, money, cooking, and spending invaluable time with her grandchildren.

Martha Jean Evans leaves behind a loving family: her brother Tommy Lee Collins; sister Loretha Collins; brother Homer Collins; daughters Blonitha Collins and Tamika Collins; son David Evans Jr; son-in-laws Charles Baitey and Travis Brown; daughter-in-laws Sheryl Collins, Donna Collins, and Pearl.; grandchildren D. Eugene Martin, Leshetrius Raven, Reginald Evans, Brandon Reaves, Dontavious Collins, Titus Murray, Kadasia Evans, and Devarius Simmons; and great-grandchildren Kaylee Lawrence and Darrius Evans. She was preceded in death by her parents Buddell and Jessie Lee Collins, and siblings Emma Lee Collins, Cora Yarbrough, Lenniel Collins, and Annie Collins.

The family will gather to celebrate her life at Gus Thornhill's Funeral Home, located at 1315 Gus Thornhill Jr Dr, East Point, GA 30344. The interment will follow at Raleigh Rucker Grave Site, 2199 Candler Rd, Decatur, GA 30032. The community will remember her as a beacon of joy and a central figure in creating memorable moments that will be cherished forever.
