Martha Placek Obituary
AGE: 90 Lakehurst
Martha Marie Placek, 90, passed away Monday, Feb. 7, 2011, at Sunrise Assisted Living of Jackson. Born in East St. Louis, Ill., Martha was a lifelong resident of Lakehurst. She was employed at the Lakehurst Naval Base in a variety of positions before joining the Lakehurst Police Department as a crossing guard. For 30 years, Martha enjoyed caring for and protecting the children of Lakehurst. Known to hundreds of parents and children simply as Mrs. P, Martha was a fixture in Lakehurst and is loved by all those she aided. Martha was an early member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Fleet Reserve Assn. and of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Lakehurst Fire Company. She was an avid bowler and she enjoyed knitting, crocheting, and baking. Her greatest joy in life was her family, which she both cared for and guarded fiercely.
Martha was predeceased by her parents, Elton and Geneva Barker; her husband, Charles J. Placek; and her son, Charles E. Placek. She is survived by her daughter-in-law, Kathleen Placek of Whiting; her grandsons, Charles J. Placek II and his husband William Gaul Jr. of Manchester, and Joseph Placek and his wife Monique of Manchester; her great-grandchildren, Mackenzie Placek and Spencer Placek; and her loyal companion, Sandy, a 15 year old cocker spaniel.
A memorial mass to celebrate Martha's life will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 12 at the Cathedral of the Air, Route 547, Manchester. All are welcome. Burial will be private.
