Martin Bacon Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on May 13, 2013.
A headteacher who transformed his school into the best state secondary in Cambridgeshire died today aged 46.

Martin Bacon, the principal of Swavesey Village College, passed away this morning after being diagnosed with a brain tumour in July last year.

The father-of-two, who had so much time for his pupils he would chat with them over a cup of tea in his office, oversaw the school's meteoric rise to be ranked in the top 3 per cent of all schools in England.

His peers said although he achieved incredible things, he refused to take personal credit - preferring to praise his students and staff instead.

Mark Woods, executive principal of Cambridge Meridian Academies Trust, which runs Swavesey, The Manor School in Cambridge and Nene Park Academy in Peterborough, announced the sad news to parents today.

He said: "Martin Bacon was a headteacher and principal who had the distinction of rebuilding, literally and metaphorically Swavesey Village College, Nene Park Academy and had started the process of change at the Manor School, Cambridge.

"Leading his team he was instrumental in establishing the vision that led to the securing of the new secondary school build scheduled for Northstowe. All these schools benefited from his tireless drive, enthusiasm and leadership."

He added: "Even after his condition took its terrible toll he continued to bring the same energy and enthusiasm to every aspect of his life, illustrated in March this year when he managed to complete the Swavesey 5 mile run.

"It is typical that the "back pain" he lightly referred to on his Just Giving Page (http://www.justgiving.com/Martin-Bacon1), was in fact a serious spinal tumour.

"Throughout his struggle his monumental positivity and determination remain a lasting example of his humanity."

Mr Bacon, a former teacher at Longsands College, St Neots, passed away at the Sue Ryder Hospice in Peterborough and is survived by his wife Kathleen, and children, Jess and Josh.

I had the 'opportunity' to meet Mr Bacon many times throughout my two boys time at SVC. Although it wasn't always over the best issues he was always friendly, kind and genuine. My boys have turned out to be lovely adults and their time at SVC under his guidance surely had a massive impact. Your legacy lives on through many and for that we will always be grateful. A very grateful family x RIP Mr Bacon and all the best to your family x

This New Yorker knows the great loss to the world Martin Bacon will be. At a time when so many of our youth seem alienated and at sea, we can ill afford to lose someone like him, who was making a difference for the better. So sorry to hear of his death.

It was with great sadness that we learned of the passing of our classmate Martin, just weeks away from a school reunion to celebrate 30 years since our graduation. Instead of meeting you again we will be raising a glass to absent friends instead. It was a priviledge to share our formative years with you, and we are immensely proud of your acheivements since and humbled by the many lives you have so clearly touched. We offer Kathleen and both of your families our deepest condolences.

I went to secondary school with Martin, and he was a great guy then with a lot of integrity. I am not surprised that he was so successful in his later life, what a real loss at such a young age, but great that he leaves such a legacy behind him. RIP Martin. xxx

Martin,
You were truly inspirational as a man, and as a headteacher. As your staff and people who loved you, we promise to carry on your legacy. It truly will be "business as usual" at Swavesey, and we will be proud to carry on what you had the vision to start. You will be sadly missed, but I feel very grateful to have known you, and will learn from everything you taught me.
With love to your family at this sad time xxx

Martin and I started working at SVC on the same day in January 2003. He was a genuine, kind person whose door was always open if you needed to have a chat or discuss anything. I remember one Friday evening, just before a half term week, when I'd locked myself out of my car. Martin came over to make sure I was ok and would be able to get home - joking that it was the sort of thing he would have done - and didn't leave until the recovery service had arrived. It was an honour and privilege to have worked with such an inspirational man who will be sorely missed, but his legacy will live on.

Martin allowed me to complete my training at SVC which led to me getting a job, finding my husband and being blessed with my little girl. He was an inspiration to both me and my husband and we wouldn't be where we are today without him. He always had time for everyone and made knowing each individual a priority. Not many bosses would know the name and lives of all their staff no matter where they work within the school. Swavesey won't be the same without him but he will live on through all of us who knew him. A true legend, taken to early by the angels. Maybe they had a problem up there that needed fixing...they've for the man for the job-heaven is a better place with Martin there. Sleep peacefully x

I have worked for the school nearly 8yrs under Martin's leadership. What a great man he is and always will be. On my first day at SVC he came and found me to ask how my day had been, on another snowy day, students were throwing snowballs out in the courtyard (a health and safety issue), I went out thinking how am I going to stop 100 students from doing this, I walked out one door, Martin another, we looked at each other and he said' oh well, they are kids after all' and we just sat and watched them to make sure they were playing safely. In a world where there is controversy and mayhem, Martin saw each person as an individual and saw the good in everyone. What a man. I know you will be sorely missed by all and we will strive to keep SVC the school you successfully made it. Until we meet again ;) Thoughts and love to your family at this very sad time xxx

I had the honor of knowing Martin back in the late 1980's early 1990's in the states. May the Lord be with his family.

May 18, 2013

This is such a sad, sad loss. I just hope that Martin's family can gain some comfort by reading the extensive list of tributes here and to see how loved and respected Martin is - by so many people whose lives he has touched.

Both of my kids (now 18 and 16) have benefitted from Martin's massive contribution to SVC's wonderfully supportive environment. At every event we attended as parents, across many years - from parents evenings through to christmas concerts - Martin was there waiting by the main entrance with a cheery "hello". It is obvious that he loved his job, but he always seemed to go "the extra mile".

Such an outpouring of love and respect from pupils, teachers and parents alike is obviously testament to a wonderfully genuine and decent man.

He will be very sorely missed - but I expect his influence and memory will live on for a very long time ...

Martin was my cousin who i hadnt seen for many years , reading these comments and watching the video has really inspired me to know what a great chap he turned out to be. Its a shame that as children we all visited each other but as we grew up had our own families that you dont stay in contact. I will hold dear the memories i have and send all his family my heartfelt love and hugs. Cherish the ones you love everday.

My abiding memory of Martin Bacon was at an induction evening at SVC when he gave a pledge to all parents that he would get to know all our children for the individuals they are. I had the pleasure of working with Martín and sharing an occasional pint. He never lost faith in a single child in his care, often quoting that 'every child matters', a true article of faith to him not empty rhetoric. All these heartfelt tributes illustrate how very loved and respected Martin Bacon was. We as parents of four children who were "under his watch" at SVC are utterly grateful to have had him in their and our lives. He was a lynchpin in the community and the educational world in this country and it feels so wrong not to have him here now. Sincere condolences to his family and friends. Martin - thank you from the bottom of our hearts. You will never be forgotten. Your legacy will continue.

My three children were lucky enough to have attended SVC under Martin's headship. He was an inspirational headteacher and a truly remarkable man who wanted the best for every pupil. He has influenced so many lives for the better and his passing is a tragic loss. His legacy will live on in the work and vision he started and in the young people who go into the world making it a better place for having known him. I hope that the outpouring of love and respect will be of comfort to his family at this very sad time.

I met Martin at NPA 2 years ago when deciding what secondary school to send my daughter to. He was extremely positive and passionate about NPA and the changes that had already been made whilst they were working closely with Swavesey. He was truly inspirational, my thoughts are with his family.

May 14, 2013

Not many people realise that Martin was head of RE and also ahead of middle school at the King's School Peterborough - in fact he beat me to that job and he was 15 years younger than me! But do you know what, I did not mind one bit. I recognised then, as did others at King's that this young man, at the start of his career had exceptional qualities. He was funny, warm, driven, inspirational and challenging in the best possible way. He encouraged me to look at things differently: 'turn your head' 'look in the other direction' 'we are facing the wrong way for these kids'. Some might say what a sad loss- but actually what a privilege to have had him in our lives even for this short time.

Thankyou.

I worked with Martin for a number of years and have kept in touch with him regularly. I have read very comment and can add little. When he told me he had been successful in getting the job of Headteacher at Swavesey I knew he would become one of the best head teachers in the country. He was! As a colleague he was an inspiration, what a man and what a human being. At a selfish level I feel absolutely honoured that this awe inspiring man would call me his friend. We are all richer for knowing him and a little poorer now he is gone. We all have a responsibility to build on what he gave us, which was loads and loads and loads.

Martin Bacon was a fantastic man and a caring and supportive teacher, who knew almost every pupil by their first name and took an active interest in their well-being. He was present at every school event and always full of praise for staff and students' achievements, regardless of how big or small these might have been. It is truly heartening to see that every memory of him is positive and that the immense time and effort he put into developing education in Cambridgeshire is well-appreciated. My condolences go out to his family.

Mr Bacon, you were an inspiration to so many at SVC and truly made it a better place for everyone. He cared about every single one of the students there and he will be be sorely, sorely missed. His loss is a great loss to everyone who knew him and my thoughts are with his friends and family. Thank you for all that you did for us, RIP x

An amazing Head who has left a legacy not just to SVC to other schools too. My condolences to his family - a very tragic loss at such a young age of a highly gifted, caring and lovely man. RIP Martin and may your work grow and flourish in tribute to all you gave and meant to you staff, parents and pupils.

Such a sad day, to lose Mr Bacon who was such an inspiration to all his pupils, and knew so many parents as well as every student by first name. I will always remember him for the excellent support he gave my girls at SVC. Their Prom nights were made so special by Mr Bacon opening every limo door on arrival, he was wonderful and we will treasure those memories.
