It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of our husband and father, Martin Davalos, Jr. on August 23, 2014.
Martin was born August 26,1943 in Midland, Texas. After graduating from Big Spring High School he enlisted in the Army and was stationed in Germany from 1963-1966. Immediately upon returning home he married his sweetheart, Lupe Mendoza, on August 27, 1966.
In 1967 Martin, his wife and newborn daughter drove to California to visit family and decided to stay. He earned his A.A. degree from Santa Barbara City College and went on to earn a B.A. in Law, graduating the same week his second daughter was born in 1971.
The Davalos family then moved to Oxnard in 1972 during which time Martin worked for Avco Finance. He later worked for Santa Monica Bank as well as Farmers Insurance. Martin always had an entrepreneurial spirit and decided to open his own tax service business in downtown Oxnard. Soon after, his wife joined him and they worked side by side for over 40 years. Their company, Martin Davalos & Associates is still serving the local community and is now run by his wife, Lupe.
Martin was a generous man with a big heart. He was a voracious reader, extremely intelligent and creative. He loved children and his was the house all the neighborhood kids would come to. He was fascinated by construction and built 2 room additions to his home with the help of neighbors and friends.
Being a Texas boy he had a weak spot for barbeque and was a master griller. Ribs, tri tip and steaks were frequently served at the Davalos house. His mom was from Louisiana and a love of southern cooking (and terminology) was also part of his daily life.
Gambling was his other passion. Black jack was his game and he was always lucky. Yearly family pilgrimages were made to Vegas where he enjoyed every moment.
Some of his fondest memories were his early years. His father worked as a foreman for the railroad and the entire family spent time living and traveling across the states in a caboose. His army years were also a highlight. He was so proud to have served his country and his face lit up when he told stories of being a soldier in Germany, If he were asked what his proudest life accomplishment was, without a doubt he would have said his family and his grandchildren. He loved his wife and daughters, but was absolutely over the moon for his four grandchildren.
Martin is preceeded in death by his parents, Joanna Davalos and Martin Davalos, Sr. He is survived by his wife of almost 48 years, Lupe, his daughters Leticia Beltran (husband Jaime), Elissa Davalos, grandchildren Bianca, Aris and Isabella Beltran and Enzo Davalos. He is survived by siblings Esperanza Cruz, Consuelo Iribarren, Joanne Shinavar, Joe Acosta as well as many nephews and nieces. The visitation and rosary will be held on September 1, 2014 at Reardon Funeral Home, 511 N. A Street, Oxnard, CA. Visitation is at 6pm and Rosary at 7pm.
The funeral mass will be at 10am on September 2, 2014 at Santa Clara Church, 323 S. E. St. Oxnard. Following the mass will be the procession to Santa Clara Cemetary, 2370 N. H Street, Oxnard.
Immediately following the services the family will be hosting a Celebration of Martin's Life, from 12-5pm at the Residence Inn by Marriot at River Ridge, 2101 W. Vineyard Ave, Oxnard.

Lupe, Leticia and Elissa,
Shane and I were so saddened when we heard the news of Martin's passing. It's hard to believe we have known you both for over 30 years. You both took on the challenge of babysitting a young little boy with lots of energy. From the first day you welcomed both of us into your home and treated us like family for which I will be eternally grateful. I thank Martin for being such a positive role model in Shame's life and have no doubt it helped shape him into the fine man he is today. May all the outpouring of love and prayers bring you comfort in the days ahead. I know this has been a difficult year for you all but remember the will of God will never take you where the grace of God will not be with you.
Much love to you always.
