Martin "DOC" Dougherty

Martin "DOC" Dougherty, age 60, passed away on January 3, 2024, just days past his 60th birthday, in Bowie, Maryland. He was born in Santiago, Chile, raised in a military family and a true free spirit throughout his entire adult life.

Known for his zest for life and adventurous spirit, DOC was a beloved figure to many. He had a remarkable ability to bring laughter and joy to those around him, even during the most difficult times. His warm hugs and infectious laughter will be deeply missed by all who knew him. DOC had a deep love for his family and his furry companions.

DOC was a world traveler and a curious explorer. He had an insatiable thirst for knowledge and a passion for photography. His career as an amazing photojournalist allowed him to capture the essence of the American Political landscape, different cultures and share them with the world. His work will continue to inspire and captivate audiences for years to come.

In his free time, DOC enjoyed embarking on international motorcycle tours and visiting friends around the country. These adventures allowed him to combine his love for friends, travel and photography, creating unforgettable memories along the way.

DOC leaves behind a loving family, including his parents Maurice (Col. Ret) and Palma, & his siblings Sally and David; sisters-in-law Kathy and Patti; his nephews David and Billy; and nieces Doris and Ellawyn. He was preceded in death by his brother "Reece." He will be dearly missed by his best friends in life, including Isabella and Bobby as well as his on the road friends Khalil, Geoff, & Kenny; and all the Mannheim Bison Gang.

A celebration of DOC's remarkable life journey will take place on Thursday, January 11, 2024, from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. at the Old Town Grille at 8604 Chestnut Ave, Bowie, MD 20715.

Martin "DOC" Dougherty will be remembered for his vibrant spirit, his love for life, and his unwavering dedication to his craft. He touched the lives of many, leaving behind a legacy that will forever be cherished.

I recently talked to a former co-worker about Martin. He still makes us laugh when we think of him. He was a real character. Happy Holidays. -Mike

I worked with Doc many years ago a considered him a true friend. From reading so many great tributes here, I think that´s the only kind he made. I´ll remember his jovial sense of humor, his keen intelligence and his zest for life. We hadn´t spoken in several years, but I know I´ll truly miss him.

Martin was a friend and co-worker of mine. He had one of the quickest wits and was great fun to be around. I still laugh when I think of about him and his great sense of humor. RIP brother.

I´m just heartbroken, as is our entire Dardis family. Doc was like a brother to me and my siblings, and like a son to my parents. And he embraced and loved us likewise, as he did all those he received into his heart. What a pure, big, marvelous heart he had - expanding to take in not just all of us, but to inhale the entire world.

We enjoyed a magical evening together just a few weeks ago, as he and I celebrated our 60th birthdays in the warm glow of friends and family. He was as resilient as ever, full of resolve to explore further, to squeeze the most out of life. Though the life ahead of him has been taken away, the life he lived was truly lived that way.

Thank you, Martin, for gracing our lives. You´ll be forever missed, and forever in our hearts.

I had the privilege of sharing a weekend this past August with Martin at our home in Virginia. Though I had seen him a few times in past years, this was truly a very special weekend that will forever be cherished!

Martin showed up for everyone. If there was any kind of Mannheim gathering, he was there. I feel fortunate to have been his friend for 40+ years. That is what I will hang onto for now. I´ve got nothing but love for Doc.

I had the pleasure of working with Doc at the senate. Doc was awesome to work with, he made work fun and less like work. Always with a joke or a good ribbing. I’ll miss you brother.

MARTIN and I were working for competing networks while covering the Romney campaign in 2012. All I could say is, I can never have a better wingman. He took his work seriously but he also kept a very open- minded perspective on life and how it should be enjoyed. Neil

With much love brother! Imagine you are on that chopper heading to the Pearly Gates. St Peter is going to make you leave it outside though...keep the motor running though! Will miss you terribly. Know once you get there you'll see Reece...and the rest of our ancestors. Love you forever and will see you again one day in eternity!
