Martin Hansen Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Aug. 11, 2025.
Martin "Marty" Alan Hansen, beloved husband, father, brother, and friend, passed away peacefully on April 4, 2025, surrounded by his loving family. He was 77 years old.

Born on May 6, 1947, in Chicago, Illinois, Marty was the oldest of six children and a 1965 graduate of The Thomas Edison High School in Gary, Indiana. He went on to serve honorably in the United States Army from 1969 to 1971, a time that reflected his dedication, discipline, and commitment to service. While stationed in Germany, Marty met Babette Konig. The two married in 1971 and returned to Indiana. Marty graduated from Purdue University with a degree in Chemistry before settling in Pennsylvania, where he and Babette raised their three children and shared over 30 years of marriage. During this time, Martin was a chemist at Rohm and Haas. Babette passed away in 2021.

Marty's life was rich with curiosity, craftsmanship, and connection. He had a gift for striking up conversations with anyone and remembering the details for years. Whether working with tools, reading technical books, exploring new technology, or embarking on outdoor adventures, he approached every interest with enthusiasm and a sense of purpose. His love for camping, fishing, and traveling became a constant source of joy that he generously shared with his family.

His children remember him as a man who could turn everyday moments into extraordinary memories - camping trips under a parachute rigged high above the campsite, road trips with highlighted maps and carefully planned stops, or projects that encouraged creativity and hands-on learning. He brought warmth, kindness, and optimism to everyone he met.

As the oldest of six, Marty is remembered by his siblings as "larger than life." He was a high achiever, a devoted car enthusiast, and someone who found peace and joy in fishing and camping. His presence was a steady source of encouragement, guidance, and good humor to those who knew him best.

Marty is survived by his children, Jennifer, Michelle and Rob, sons-in-law's, Darren and Norman, and four grandchildren; his brothers Dave and Corey; and his sister Cindy, and her husband Cruz, along with extended family and countless friends who will carry forward his example of kindness, curiosity, and perseverance.

A memorial service was held on August 9, 2025, at First Lutheran Church of Ellicott City, Maryland, where family and friends gathered to celebrate his life and share treasured memories. His was a life well-lived, and he will be deeply missed.
