Martin Mason Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jun. 20, 2011.
MASON, Martin William Peacefully on June 18, 2011. Predeceased by his father, Arthur William, and survived by his loving wife Linda Campbell, son Andrew (Jessica Romkey), mother Mary Gwendoline and brothers Roger (Jean) and Rodney (Lynda). He will also be greatly missed by granddaughters Ava and Vivian, brother-in-law Dawson Campbell (Patricia), nieces Sarah, Hannah and Eliza and nephews Matthew, Graham, James and Paul. Martin was born and raised in London, England, where he attended Kilburn Grammar before graduating from Exeter University. After extensive travels across the globe, Martin settled in Canada, where, in September 1970, he met Linda at McMaster University while pursuing graduate studies. They were married on May 26, 1973 and spent 38 wonderful years together. Martin settled on a career in law after first beginning his professional career as a political science lecturer at Carleton University and the University of Saskatchewan. He worked in the Ottawa office of the firm of Gowling Lafleur Henderson LLP beginning in 1983, as an articling student, an associate and finally as partner. Martin was honoured to serve as Managing Partner of the Ottawa office between 2002 and 2006. He practiced in the areas of administrative law, constitutional law and civil litigation. This practice primarily brought him before the Federal Courts and tribunals such as the Patented Medicine Prices Review Board. Throughout the course of his career he also plead before the Supreme Court. Martin was a member of the Canadian Bar Association and served on its National and Ontario Councils and on various committees. From 1999, Martin was a member of the Federal Court Reports Advisory Committee responsible for reviewing cases in administrative and constitutional law. For the last thirteen years Martin served as adjunct professor at the University of Ottawa, where he taught constitutional law. Martin had a lifelong interest in politics, serving for a time as a riding association president and on the National Council of the P.C. Party of Canada between 1995 and 2000. Martin was known for his dedication to his work, his love of family, his good nature and his warm sense of humour. He will be greatly missed and fondly remembered by the many people whose lives he touched. A service to commemorate and celebrate his life will be held on June 23, 2011, 2pm at MacKay United Church (39 Dufferin Road, Ottawa). For those who wish, contributions in Martin's memory may be directed to Camp Trillium ( www.camptrillium.com ) or the University of Ottawa Heart Institute ( www.ottawaheart.ca ).

To Linda and family,

Remembering Martin
==================

We had not seen each other for a few years, but when we did, Martin and I always had great conversations. There was lots of teasing each other about our different political affiliations and ideological perspectives. It was good natured banter. But above all, there was an intellectual rigour and integrity, along with a kindness of spirit and a wonderful sense of irony and humour.

I had hoped we would grow old together in retirement and continue the dialogue. Instead, I have lost a comrade and this night is darker than most. There were so many conversations we did not finish.

take care dear soul,
our love to your family.

Dear Linda, Andrew, Jessica and family,

We were saddened to hear of Martin's passing. Although we only met him a few times, Martin was a most impressive, kind and charming gentleman. His love and devotion towards his family was admirable and I know how much he adored little Ava and Vivian. May you be comforted by those around you and by the many warm and wonderful memories we are sure you shared with Martin. May he be at peace. With our most sincere sympathy,

A sad, sad loss. We remember informal dinners with Martin and Linda, and Martin's always humorous political debates with jackie. We also recall Martin and Linda's wonder at finding a train that took them from Cambridge to our summer house in Shropshire. And Martin and Linda walking Sonny Liston, the boxer dog, and Martin's insistence on ordering Yorkshire pudding with his roast pork at the local pub. A lovely man, gone far too soon.
With our sympathy and affection.

I articled at Gowlings in 1985 and worked for Martin occasionally at that time. You also lived next door to my parents for some time. For the last few years, I have had the pleasure of having Martin appear before a tribunal I sit on.
He was just a terrific lawyer and a very decent person. I am very sorry for your loss. The bar has lost an outstanding counsel and I feel very lucky to have known him. With sympathy.

Martin was one of the most talented counsel in the country, and a man of great civility and kindness. He will be sorely missed in the profession, by his many friends and admirers, and most of all, I'm sure by his family - but his legacy will survive, thank God.
