I did not know that Martin and I shared a birthday.
I remember riding with him on the Trek in 2023, and also chatting with him while on the bus to Sunday River several times for previous Treks. Such a nice man.

Today, while I was going over some photos from an old camera, I came across a photo of Martin and I believe it's Eli riding in one of the Treks. My husband and I knew the two of them from riding the shuttle bus to Sunday River with them for several years. In 2023, I rode by myself as my husband volunteered that year. Martin was also alone. We ended up riding along with one another a few times. Even though we recognized each other, and had passed on the Kennebec River Rail Trail over the years, we didn't know each other's names. It was fun to ride along with him and chat for a while, then one or the other of us would move ahead or slow down. In our conversations, it was clear that he was immensely proud of his children. I was very sad to read about his kayaking accident. I don't know if you'll get this, as it's been over a year. I'm not sure how long this service remains active, but I'm attaching the photo. I didn't know your father very well, but I was impressed with his service to the community.

Dear Spahn Family,
My deepest condolences for the tragic, sudden loss of Martin. I have such fond and loving memories of him as a young girl growing up in Sheridan while friends with Steve and Jeanette. Marty was so easy going, kind, funny, and loving to all. I wrap you in heartfelt hugs as I say prayers for him and all the big, wonderful Spahn family.
With love and sympathy,
