Maxine and all family members,
My sincere condolences to you.
Marty and I were football teammates at the Universisty of South Dakota in 1966. We were also good friends and roomates in 1967 and 1968. Marty was a good guy and a determined individual. We had a lot of good times together in college. He invited me to his home in early 1967. I drove us to Worthington, Minn. and enjoyed his parents and his tour of the town and his old school.
I was surprised when Marty enlisted in the Navy in November 1968 but he said it was something he needed to do at that time. I think he found his niche in naval Nuclear submarines. He was a intelligent and proud man. but you already knew that. I lost touch with him when he enlisted but was glad to hear he had a highly successful life and served his country honorably.
May you all find solace in the time and memories you shared together.
I'm sure Marty is at peace in heaven and will forever be with you.

He loved golf and when playing in an outing at Spearfish, SD 15 years ago, Marty hit a drive of 280+ and we were putting for eagle on a par 4. Of course it was downhill but we each had a putt (playing a scramble)...yup you guest it. We both 3 putted and wasted a wonderful drive!!
Visited Marty in IL after he had lost his first wife Jo. Marty liked to smoke but never in the house. He was outside with my wonderful wife Patty smoking and eating peanuts. Up comes a squirrel and he shells a peanut and gives it to the squirrel.....think they did that many times before but it really impressed my wife on how caring Marty was.
At Worthington High School we had a really good choir director (Mr Hammer) and he required each of us to select a song and sing it to the choir. Marty had a beautiful bass voice and sang "When big Profundo sang low C all the ladies they would quiver".....and I followed with the "Orange Grove" but not nearly as sexy as the Big Profundo.....over the years I practiced singing that to my dog every morning before we went for our first walk and I got very good at coming close to Marty. I was going to perform this at Marty's celebration of life ceremony...but unfortunately I was not able to make it. 15 years of wasted practice. . Oh how I miss him....George Rayl
