MARVIN BOWEN Obituary

Published by Richmond Times-Dispatch on Aug. 8, 2013.
BOWEN, Mr. Marvin Jerry, 53, transcended the cares of this world on August 1, 2013. He was born in Clarksburg, W.Va., but grew up in Chester, Va. Jerry enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1979, taking his basic training at Fort Sill, Okla. His eight years of active duty as a Fire Support Specialist included tours at Fort Ord, Calif., Fort Knox, Ky., and Ray Barracks, Freidberg, West Germany. He rose to the rank of Sergeant and earned several awards and commendations, including the Army Achievement Medal 2nd Oak Leaf Cluster, Overseas Service Ribbon, Army Service Ribbon, and Army Good Conduct Medal (2nd Award). After his discharge in 1987, Jerry began a new career as customer service representative in the Richmond Branch of Cross Company and was promoted to operations manager in less than one year. In 1991, he was became a regional operations manager responsible for four fluid power branches in the company's Northern region. Jerry received the company's prestigious Nathan Gilbert Award in 2000 for his dedication to customer service, teamwork and outstanding performance. In 2001, he joined New York Life as an agent in the Richmond General Office and considered this work a mission field in which he could minister to widows and orphans. His exceptional service to his clients made Jerry a top performer and earned him recognition as an executive council agent, annuity champion, long-term care (LTC) leader, and member of the LTC Circle of Champions. Jerry earned the Certified in Long-Term Care (CLTC) and Life Underwriter Training Council Fellow (CLUTC) designations before he retired on disability in 2011. He will be best remembered for his lively sense of humor, and his commitment to excellence in everything he ventured to do in life. He is survived by his wife, Barbara Bowen; his brother, Larry Bowen; his children, Matthew Bowen, Jennifer Lackey and husband, Michael, and Gregory Bowen; and two grandchildren, William (Connor) Bryant and Carson Lackey. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on August 12, at Winn's Baptist Church, 12320 Winn's Church Rd., Glen Allen, Va., 23059. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Wounded Warriors. "My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me. I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; no one will snatch them out of my hand. My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all; no one can snatch them out of my Father's hand." John 10:27-29

Barbara,

I am deeply saddened, not just for you and your family, but for all who knew him. Jerry had a profound impact on so many of us, and so many lives. Both Jerry and I started our careers at New York Life in 2001. I always found him to be a source of strength, unmatched determination and humor. No matter how difficult things were, Jerry always had a smile, timely advice and was always ready with a humorous story. “I will never forget the stories we shared, the challenges we faced and the laughs we had together!” Jerry's loss will be keenly felt, and this place we live in is just a little grayer without him. May God give you and your family the strength to face the days ahead.

Barbara,
I was deeply saddened to learn of Jerry's death. My thoughts and prayers go out to you and the family. Jerry was a wonderful husband to you. I'll never forget all of the lovely flowers he sent you at the office when you worked with me here at VDEM. He was indeed a kind and thoughtful person. I am glad I had the opportunity of meeting such a nice man. Cherish the loving memories and he will always be with you in your heart. Please know that our Heavenly Father is with you, the children, and Jerry's brother during your hour of bereavement and always.

I enjoyed working with Jerry at Cross and still think of him in a most possitive way. Special memories are of a week of training at Texas A&M and his special brand of humor. I pray for strength and understanding for Barbara and the family.

I worked with Jerry at Crossco from the
time he arrived until he departed. Jerry advanced our company in many ways and I have always hoped that he would return to Crossco one day.

May the grace of God help all of the family through this time of grief.

I worked with Jerry at Cross for 9 years with 3 of them as my supervisor. He was always very professional, great to work with and was an excellent boss. He had a great sense of humor but could also turn very serious in moment as needed. I am very sorry to hear of his passing!
