Oakville community

Funeral for Marvin Raymon Fitzgerald, 76, of the Oakville community in Lawrence County will be 1 p.m. Sunday at Gibson Chapel Methodist Church with the Reverend Robert Yarbrough Jr. officiating and interment in Lindsey Cemetery. The body will lie in repose one hour prior to funeral service. Visitation will be Saturday evening from 5:30 to 7 at Reynolds Funeral Home.

Mr. Fitzgerald, who died February 20, 2012, was born in Oakville to the late Richard and Julia Ann Alexander Fitzgerald. He confessed hope in Christ at an early age and joined Gibson Chapel C.M.E. Church where he was very active in the church. He attended Moulton High School and later moved to Cleveland, Ohio. While in Cleveland he was an entrepreneur that ran a record and corner variety store. He married the late Edith Terrell and this union was blessed with two sons, Ronnie and Raymon.

In 1976, Marvin moved back home. He reunited with Gibson Chapel Church where he remained faithful and served in numerous capacities in the church. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge No. 69 where he had served as Worship Master. He was a member of the Order of Eastern Star Obra Chapter No. 148 where he served as Worthy Patron.

He was employed at Ingalls Shipyard and later with the Lawrence County Board of Education. He also was instrumental in the development of the Jessie Owens Park. He will be missed by all who knew and love him because he certainly touched the life of many.

He leaves to cherish his memory, three sons, Ronnie and Raymon Fitzgerald, both of Cleveland, Ohio, and James Hood of Northfolk, Va.; 12 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren; brother, Oscar Fitzgerald and sister, Arkie Mae Williams, both of Cleveland, Ohio; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Flower attendants will be members of the Order of Eastern Star and Pallbearers will be the Masonic Lodge.

I was sad to come across this obituary, but happy to know Ray made so many contributions to others and was so obviously a well-respected member of his church and community. I would expect nothing less. My sympathy goes out to his sons and all who miss his presence. Sincely, Vicki Fitzgeral-Ware, his second wife.
