Lee Hyland

January 9, 1915 -

January 1, 2012

Barbara Edwina Lee Hyland passed into eternity on January 1, 2012, The Feast of the Solemnity of The Blessed Virgin Mary, The Mother of God, at the hour of Divine Mercy. Barbara's health had gradually declined in the last two years.

She was loved as much as any mother can be by her children, Lt. Colonel Lawrence N. Hyland (Kathrine McConnell Hyland), Dr. Richard E. Hyland (Dr. Caryl Hebert Hyland), and Dr. Patrick A. Hyland (Linda Burns-Hyland).

Barbara entered the world as the daughter of Robert Edward Lee and Genvieve Revere Lee on January 9, 1915 and was a lifelong resident of Mobile, Alabama.

Baptized into the Catholic Faith, she was always a model Christian. She was raised as a member of St. Joan of Arc parish and attended Leinkauf Elementary and Barton Academy. On moving to Crichten, the family became members of St. Catherine of Sienna parish and she graduated from Murphy High School in 1932.

She resided in New Orleans for three years after her marriage to Dr. Norman D. Hyland in August, 1946, where Norman finished his doctorate degree in dentistry at Loyola University. Norman predeceased Barbara on The Feast of the Miraculous Medal, November 27, 1984. On their return to Mobile from New Orleans, Barbara and Norman settled at the Loop and became members of Little Flower parish.

Her loss is mourned by her three boys and their wives, by her grandchildren, John, Dennis, Michael, and Kathleen Hyland; her great-grandchildren, Hanna and Alexandria Hyland; and by her four nephews, John, David, Jerome and Thomas Lee, and most especially by her dearest friend and cousin, Audrey Bruce.

The family extends special thanks to Deborah Miller who assisted in her care with great devotion and love.

Barbara loved flowers, was wonderful at arranging them, and used to make posies for her sons' girlfriends, so feel free to send flowers. In addition, donations may be made to Little Flower Church.

Funeral arrangements are with Ascension Funeral Home, Mobile, Alabama.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Little Flower Catholic Church, Mobile, Alabama on Wednesday, January 4 at 11:00 A.M. Visitation will be from 9:00 to 11:00 A.M. in the nave of the church. Our Lady's Rosary is at 10:00 A.M. The celebrant of the Mass will be Reverend Father John Lynes. Special family friend, the Very Reverend Hector R.G. Perez will concelebrate.

The family requests that many Masses for the intention of the repose of her soul be celebrated.

Barbara was a woman of grace and beauty, and will be truly missed by all who knew and loved her. May her soul rest in peace.

Dear Ones,
I am so sorry for your loss. Lee Ann and I loved your precious mother, She was like part of our family. Barbara was very thoughtful, and kind to everyone. And just like my mother, Barbara was strong-willed (and sometimes stubborn) and very opinionated. We loved her despite her few faults; and a perfect person would have been boring. Barbara loved all of us with all our faults, and she never failed to show it. She always sent a birthday card or gave us a call on our birthday.
I always admired her as she was a great lady. She was very strong in her faith and Jesus was the Lord of her life. She lived a long full life, and she was truly a blessing to all of us. We have many happy memories to cherish forever.
I knew that she was very weak the last time that I spoke to her. But it was a shock when Pat called me and told me of her death. She sent me a thank you card a few weeks ago and it is still on my dining room table. I am saving it.
I miss my mother every day, and you will miss your mother, too. You can't imagine how often you will yearn to talk to her just to tell her something for there is no one like your mother. We can feel comforted knowing that both Barbara and my mother are having a great time in heaven.
I wish that I could afford to come to be with you all during this most difficult time. You all will be in my thoughts and prayers.
Much love to All,

I just learned of her death today. I could write a book about growing up and going to Aunt Barbara's (Gulf Shores, Dalphane Island, Johnson's Lake etc...) Sweet memories I have not thought of in years. We all had great childhood's because we had such great parents!! Barbara was my mother's best friend but I always called her Aunt Barbara because she was like a sister to my mother. Lawrence, Richard and Pat I will never forget. Now Mamma, Daddy and Barbara and Norman will be together. Peace be to all! You all are in my prayers

Great Lady who always welcomed us into her home and family. Those who grew up in the 50's - 70's and had an opportunity to visit at their Loop homes know what I mean.
