STERLING - Marvin V. Smith, 84, of McAllen, TX, formerly of Sterling, died on Thursday, November 10, 2022 at OSF St. Anthony Medical Center in Rockford. Marvin was born on his grandfather's farm on March 3, 1938 in Oneida, South Dakota, the son of Ira and Ruth (Mesick) Smith. He was a veteran of the US Marine Corps. Marvin married Karen "Katie" McNutt on November 10, 1961. She preceded him in death on November 8, 2018. Marvin was a lifetime member of the Rock Falls Eagle's Club, as well as the Laborers Union #727. Marvin and Katie enjoyed living as snowbirds together in Texas for 20 years. They also loved staying at Larry's Ponderosa in Lyndon when returning to visit Illinois.

Survivors include one daughter, Lysa (Tom) Bluhm, of Rock Falls; one son, Todd (Lori) Smith, of Sterling; one brother, Henry (Paz) Smith of Port Orchard, WA; four grandchildren, Stephanie (David) Richards, of Sterling, Mellysa (Tyler) Devine, of Rock Falls, Brock Smith, and Bryce Smith, both of Chicago; and five great grandchildren, Norah, Anna, Corwin, Conner, and Collin.

Marvin was preceded in death by his parents; wife Katie; two sisters, Rosa Diede and Barbara Geyer; and two brothers, Tom and Jim Smith.

Cremation rites will be accorded. In honor of Marvin's wishes, no services will be held. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.
