Mary Ann Smith Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 3, 2024.
Mary Ann Smith passed away peacefully at her home in Grass Valley surrounded by loved ones on July 24th at the age of 85. Mary Ann Pacheco was born on November 27th, 1938, one of 8 children to William and Belle Pacheco in Oakland, Ca. She married Donald Lee Lancaster in 1954 and had two children, Donald and Deborah. In 1959 she married Ronald Perry Smith and had four children, Gene, Gina, Rhonda and Gary. MaryAnn loved God and her family and was a devoted wife and mother. Together Ron and MaryAnn raised their children in the Bay Area initially, then moved to Grass Valley in 1967.

When her youngest children began high school she entered the work force at The Grass Valley Group, 1977-1992; High Country Tech 1992-2002 and B&C Hardware 2003-2018. Having a very strong work ethic as well as always wanting to keep busy, MaryAnn recently spent time volunteering at Hospice Gift & Thrift.

Her greatest joy was being with her large family of 6 children, 14 grandchildren and 26 great grandchildren. Our mom radiated positive energy and enormous love. She could often be found outdoors gardening or with her family. She enjoyed walking, making her famous fudge at Christmas & cooking her families favorite dishes. If you knew her personally you most likely shared a cup of her beloved French coffee with her.

Our mother, grandmother, great grandmother and friend to many will be treasured and missed immensely. Her legacy is a life of unconditional love, of service and devotion.

Maryann is survived by sons, Donald (Renee) Lancaster of Merced, Gene (Tami) Smith, and Gary (Debbie) Smith of Grass Valley; Daughters Gina (William) Hall of Arizona, and Rhonda Smith of Grass Valley; brothers Alvin Pacheco and Tom Pacheco.

Maryann is preceded in death by parents, William and Belle Pacheco; daughter Deborah (Lancaster) Huson, siblings William, Ernie, George, Joseph and Darlene and great grandson Nashoba Nayukpa O'Keefe Smith.

A Celebration of Life will be held in the Spring.

Memorial contributions can be made to Hospice of The Foothill in Grass Valley.

Happy Heavenly 86th Bithday Mommy. Thank you for letting me have that wooden spoon at the last stir of the fudge you always made. I love and miss you so much. Thank you for fixing my favorite dinner and dessert year after year on my Birthday. So blessed to have had you for all the years I did.

Mary Ann worked upstairs in our office at B & C for fifteen years. She always had a smile on her beautiful face and a twinkle in her eye! Her sense of humor and positive attitude were worth their weight in gold. Her hugs were the best and her Christmas fudge was legendary! God bless you Mary Ann.

I had the privilege of knowing Mary through her granddaughter, Dalyne King (my daughter-in-law). She was lovely and I enjoyed her company at family dinners through the years. She is and will be missed by many. Gentle rest to you, Mary.

Grandma Mary, what an amazing woman! She always made me feel so welcome and loved. The way she hugged, held hands, smiled, talked, conveyed her complete love and grace, wisdom and humor! We are so blessed for the time that we were able to spend with her. Until we see you again, you are dearly missed!

What a blessing to be a Grandson of Grandma Mary.
She always gave the best hugs, and always wanted everyone to feel at home, welcome and most of all loved. We miss you. We are grateful for the time that we did get with you. And we eagerly anticipate our reunion in the courts of our heavenly Father.

With my mom I learned unconditional love. I learned who God is. I learned that no matter life´s bumps, to always look up and to remember all of your blessings. I learned what a woman of faith, of compassion and of strength looks like. I´ve learned that I had the best momma in the world.
