Mary Cheryl Cihlar

Mary Cheryl Rau Cihlar, 93, born on May 21, 1932, passed away peacefully on July 19, 2025, in Charleston, SC. She was a devoted sister, mother and grandmother, cherished by her family and friends. Cheryl was a beloved English teacher at Fort Johnson Middle School and a faithful volunteer within her community. Having achieved a Masters degree, she held her esteemed alma mater Earlham College in the highest regard.

Cheryl is survived by daughters Kimberly Cihlar Clark (Steven) and Susan Cihlar Bailey (John), daughter-in-law Laurie Cihlar, and siblings Melinda Fairburn, Dr. Richard Rau and Dr. John Rau. She took great joy in her role as grandmother to Alexandra Crump (Gus), Madison Bailey and Elliott Cihlar, and reveled in meeting her great grandson Sullivan James Crump, all of whom brought light and laughter into her life. Her cherished cat, Lila, was always by her side. She was preceded in death by her husband, James C. Cihlar, and her son, John W. Cihlar.

Cheryl's warmth, kindness and unwavering love will be deeply missed by all who knew her. A celebration of her life will take place Friday July 25, 11 a.m., at St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church, 712 Wappoo Road, Charleston, SC, with family and friends gathering to remember the incredible woman Cheryl was and share memories honoring her and her life.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in her name to "The Parkinson's Foundation."
