The Legacy of Mary Ella Cooper

Mary Ella Byrd-Cooper was the fifth of eleven children born to Horatio E. Byrd and Julia C. Mourning-Byrd on June 24, 1944 in Dothan, Alabama.

She accepted Christ as her personal savior at a very young age and was instilled Christian morals and standards by her parents.
In 1962, she graduated from Ashford Colored High School in Dothan, AL and moved to Chicago with her sister Robbie J. Randall.
Mary met the love of her life in 1964, Nemire Cooper Jr. and they were united in matrimony on August 13, 1966. To this union one child was born, Yolunda Rena.
Mary was a stay at home mother until 1976, when her daughter started school and she became a crossing guard for her daughter and other neighborhood children. She later worked at a local convenient store owned by one of her neighbors. Mary was later encouraged to become a school bus driver by a parent from the school where her daughter attended. Mary drove for School District 88 later to becoming a supervisor before her retirement in 2006.
Mary was a member New Zion Missionary Baptist Church for over 30 years where she served diligently and was a faithfully choir member and served on several auxiliaries until her health began to fail.
Mary was always full of life, love and had a laugh the was extremely infectious. She was known as everyone's mother or nana; she embraced most children as if she had given birth to them herself.
Rena may have been her only "birth" child, but she mothered many. She never met a stranger and helped all those who captured her heart or those she knew had a need. She truly lived the biblical principles that were instilled in her by her parents and shared with her siblings. Mary loved to cook and loved to sing. Often being request to sing at church by her current pastor.
On March 8, 2017, God laid Mary down gently to rest.
She was preceded in death by her parents Horatio and Julia Byrd; brother Charles Byrd; sister Robbie J. Randall; son Fredrick Doctor and god-daughter Rolanda LaShawn Brady.
Mary Ella leaves to cherish her memory: husband of 50 years Nemire Jr.; daughters Yolunda Rena Cooper both of Bellwood, IL and Stacia V. Doctor of Chicago, IL.; two grandchildren Marquis (Shonna) Hyles and Sydnye Symone Doctor and great-grandchild Drake Hyles ; sisters Lois Shipman of Carson, Ca, Carolyn E. Johnson Dothan, AL., Betty Brisette of Phoenix, AZ. , Elaine Maynor and Edith (Reafield) Vestor of Dothan, AL.; brothers Lawrence (Loyce) Byrd, Bobby Ray Byrd, and David (Mary) Byrd all of Dothan, AL.; sister-in-laws Delores Cooper of Phoenix, Az. and Mattie Cooper of Alexandria, LA.; aunts Ella Byrd McCain, Birmingham, AL., Clellie Mourning and Mary Lois Heirs of Fort Lauderdale, FL. and Annie Bell Webb of Pompano Beach, FL.

I always remember her being so nice during our grade school years with Yolanda Cooper many years ago. She also helped coach our cheerleading one year as well.

Mrs. Cooper sat on her front porch and talked to me while I played with Rashid and Dakota in my front yard. She was a wonderful, kind, generous, and loving woman. I'm fortunate to have been her next-door neighbor. I send my heartfelt condolences to Rena, Mr. Cooper, and all of Mrs. Cooper's family and friends.

My sister had a special place in all our hearts. She enjoyed life and all her sisters and brothers. We will truly miss the humor and fun things she enjoyed doing with us. We are going to miss the caring and sharing of love for each of us. We will truly miss the laughter that was a part of her any she was in our presence. I am thankful you are a peace and not in pain any more. I loved you dearly. Your Baby Sister, Edith.

Linda Coleman (Church member). My husband, Rev. Leon Coleman (deceased) and I were very fond of Mary, she held a special place in our hearts. She would always make sure when my husband preached that she would have a towel, mints and a bottle of cold water in a ziplock bag ready for him. My husband often spoke of how she make him very special and appreciated. Mary will truly be missed. May God shower His blessings on you and your father during this difficult time.

THAT IS WHAT WILL GET YOU THROUGH. YOU WILL THINK OF SOMETHING SHE SAID OR DID AND A SMILE WILL COME ACROSS YOUR FACE. MY PRAYERS ARE WITH YOU AND COOPER.

A Sweet Lady who opened her heart to me. Although our time together was brief, I felt as though we were 'girlfriends'.
As God has strengthened others, He is your strength. Continue to be the epitomy of all Sis. Mary instilled in you. Rejoice in knowing you are her living gift/legacy to the world! Love you Little One!

My prayers are with you Uncle Cooper and Rena' as you memorialize Aunt Mary today. I believe with all my heart she is in heaven with the rest of the family those we know and ancestors we've only heard about. Although she is in a better place and no longer suffering, our hearts miss her so much. I have so many fond memories of Aunt Mary including when she would come visit us in Alabama in the summer and kick the kids out of the house with one cup and a pitcher of water. LOL. But the memory that stands out the most about her is her infectious laughter that filled the room. I'm definitely going to miss that...however, it has been funneled thru her dear daughter Rena'. Aunt Mary may you rest well. Uncle Cooper and Rena my prayers are with you and I love you both.

Sending my deepest condolences to you and your family Yolunda on the loss of your mom - she is truly going to be missed by all. She was truly a friend of mine, and I enjoyed seeing her on various occasions - especially at Mother Bland's surprise birthday party - when I "neglected" to speak to her - and you "checked" me in front of her - all in love though, all in love.

Mom I miss you so...

What can I say about the woman who gave me life (by the grace of God)..? Mary Ella Byrd-Cooper was my crossing guard, girl scout leader, cheerleading coach, soft ball coach and BIGGEST SUPPORTER! My FIRST Best Friend, loved me more than anyone I know other than God. Prayed for me when I couldn't or didn't want to pray for myself. Wife, mother, sister, aunt, cousin and FRIEND to many. 'Bonus' mother to sooooo many 'Bonus' children. Loved harder than anyone I ever met. Did NOT have a selfish bone in her body. Loved God and introduced me to Him and showed me Jesus!!! Yes I will miss her so very much, but I am comforted in knowing that God loved her better than I ever could. She received His promise of three score and ten PLUS 2.5 yrs of OVERFLOW. Mary now suffers no more, she is at peace. To be absent from the body is to be present WITH the Lord. He called and she was ready to answer.
