Mary Curry Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jun. 25, 2011.
Mary A. Zumbrunnen Curry was born on a farm in Praireburg, Iowa on May 11, 1913. She stepped into eternity mid-morning on June 25, 2011. She lived 98 years. Mary was one of six children and was raised in Minnesota by her father, Charles Zumbrunnen, a farmer, and her mother, Marie Lehmann Zumbrunnen, a home maker. Following her mother’s pre-mature death, a young 13-year-old Mary was sent to live in Iowa where she worked for her room and board. Later, Mary found herself in Wyoming, Iowa and it was there she met the love of her life, Bernard Curry. After more than a eight-year courtship, Bernerd and Mary wed on July 2, 1938. In November of the following year, they welcomed their only child, Kay. Following their move to Davenport, Bernard and Mary owned and operated Curry’s Restaurant in Rock Island for several years in early 1950s. After which, Mary retained employment at Eagle Signal before her retirement in 1978. She and her husband traveled the US and Canda with their four grandchildren prior to Bernard’s death in 1994. Mary continued to travel well into her 90s to Arizona and South Carolina to visit her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She spent her days reading, playing her favorite card game, Pinochle, and attending craft class at Memorial Christian Church where she was a member for more than 50 years. Mary is survived by her only child, Kay Curry; her four grandchildren: Scott Borgstadt (wife Denise) of Sierra Vista, Arizona; Ky Borgstadt (wife Provi) of Columbia, South Carolina; Todd Borgstadt (wife Jan) of Peoria, Arizona, and Brandi Borgstadt of Davenport, Iowa; her eight great-grandchildren (Abby, Kelsey, Nathaniel, Austin, Cori, KJ, Kiera, and Jeremy) and many neices and nephews. She was preceded in death by her mother and father, her 5 brothers and sisters and her beloved husband, Bernard Curry. A memorial service will be held July 9, 2011 at 2 o’clock at Halligan-McCabe DeVries Funeral Home located at 614 Main Street, Davenport, Iowa. Her family will attend to her enternment at Wyoming City Cemetary in Wyoming, Iowa following the memorial service.
