Mary C. Custer, age 87, of Dubuque, IA, passed away peacefully at 3:15 p.m. on Wednesday, October 22, 2014 at UnityPoint Health Finley Hospital. To honor Mary's life, private family services are being held at Behr Funeral Home, 1491 Main St. with Deacon Jim Thill officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Calvary Cemetery. Mary was born on December 16, 1926, in Rickardsville, IA, daughter of Wilford and Loretta Ann (Duehr) Mueller. Mary married Glen Custer on November 28, 1946, at the Church of the Nativity. She was employed at JC Penney for 12 years until her retirement. Mary was longtime member of Holy Ghost Catholic Church. In her free time Mary enjoyed reading, sewing and cooking. One of her favorite things at this time of year was watching her grandkids and great-grandkids jump in the leaf pile raked up from the oak tree in her yard. Mary was a loving wife, mother and grandmother and will be sadly and dearly missed by all who knew and loved her. Mary is survived by her husband, Glen Custer, Dubuque, IA, her son, David Custer, Dubuque, 4 grandchildren; Lynn (Kevin) Cronin, Mike Custer, Dan (Rachelle) Custer and Jenny (Calvin) Patten. 7 great-grandchildren; Denis and Jenna Wagner, Casey and Colin Cronin and Jonahs, Jaxson and Maddox Custer. her siblings, Ronald (Margaret) Mueller, both of Dubuque. Mary was preceded in death by her parents, her sisters Elizabeth Mueller and Bessie Rose, her brother Laverne Mueller and her daughter-in-law Cheryl. A Mary C. Custer memorial fund has been established. The family would like to thank the wonderful nurses and staff at UnityPoint Health Finley Hospital and Luther Manor for their compassionate and tender care of Mary.
