Mary continued to teach wherever she lived, culminating with 31 years at Mendenhall Elementary in Plano Independent School District, retiring in 2001.

After her retirement, Mary kept busy with substituting, book clubs, garden clubs, volunteering at McKinney's Chestnut Square as a docent, and serving on various committees at her church, St. Gabriel's in McKinney.
