Sister Mary Paul Hickey, a Pittsburgh Sister of Mercy for 80 years, died on Wednesday, January 16, 2019, at the Convent of Mercy in Oakland. Born in McKeesport, PA, she was 97 years old. Daughter of John and Irene (Welsh) Hickey, Sister Mary Paul entered the Sisters of Mercy from St. Peter's Parish, McKeesport in 1939 and made final vows in 1944. Sister Mary Paul earned a bachelor's degree from Mount Mercy College (now Carlow University), a master's in education administration from Duquesne University and a Ph.D. from Fordham University. A gifted educator of little children, she taught first and second grades at several diocesan schools, and at Our Lady of Mercy Academy. When the Academy moved to a new site in 1963, Sister Mary Paul founded The Campus School of Carlow University which today includes Preschool, Pre-K, Kindergarten and Montessori preschool, and grades 1-8, on the grounds of Carlow University. Additionally, she taught teachers as a lecturer, professor, and chair of the Department of Education at Carlow, introducing the Cadet program for Catholic School teachers and other innovative programs that helped to make Carlow a leader in education. In the 1980's Sister Mary Paul moved to Memphis, TN where she served as executive director of St. Peter Home for Children, a residence for emotionally disturbed and delinquent boys and girls. She returned to Pittsburgh in 1988 and served in several positions at Carlow University, including director of residence, chair of the Child Care Center, and executive director of Children's Programs, including The Campus School. After retirement in 2006, she volunteered as the alumni relations director for The Campus School. Most recently, she participated in the ministry of prayer, and maintained her connection to the school through her lunchtime conversation with its current leaders. Whatever she did, Sister Mary Paul brought intelligence, compassionate understanding, enthusiasm, and humor to her service. Her love for the education of children generated a unique, practical classroom approach such that the children she taught and teachers she formed do not forget her. "She was first of all a teacher with extraordinary management skills," her brother Tom remarked. "As a teenager, she knew what she wanted to be and do, and she enjoyed 80 years of a life dedicated to others. She touched so many lives." Preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Reverend John P. Hickey, Paul S. Hickey; and sister, Loretta Nee; Sister Mary Paul is survived by a brother, Thomas J. Hickey; nieces, nephews and grandnieces and nephews. Friends will be received Friday, January 18, 2019, from 4 to 7 p.m. and Saturday, January 19, 2019, from 8-11 a.m. at the Convent of Mercy, 3333 Fifth Avenue followed by a funeral Mass Saturday at 11 a.m. in the Convent Chapel. Interment will be in St. Xavier's Cemetery, Latrobe, PA. Arrangements entrusted to the EDWARD P. KANAI FUNERAL HOME, 500 Greenfield Avenue. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Sisters of Mercy, 3333 Fifth Ave., Pittsburgh, PA 15213, or to The Campus School of Carlow University, 3333 Fifth Ave., Pittsburgh, PA 15213.

Sister Mary Paul changed my life Being the oldest of seven children, there was absolutely no way I could attend college. I had wanted to become a teacher since I was five years old. Because of Sister Mary Paul's Cadet program an accelerated college and teaching program where we taught in Catholic schools our junior and senior years and received free tuition.... I was able to become a teacher there were 25 of us enrolled each year in this program and I think it existed for least five years That meant 125 women received a college education and a teaching career because of Sister Mary Paul None of us could have afforded to go to college. We thank you Sister Mary Paul for changing our lives

I would like to express my deepest sympathy for your loss. I pray that the God of all comfort grant you peace at this time. We find one of his promises in John 6:40, of the hope to see our loved ones again. He will comfort your heart and give you peace, strength, and hope in the days ahead.

Sister Mary Paul was my first grade teacher in 1946 at St. Paul's Cathedral Grade School. She was a great teacher. She always had a big smile for everyone. Her memory was fantastic.I moved out of town but always enjoyed seeing her when I was in Pgh. She was interested in everyone and accomplished so much for the Lord. We will miss her. May she rest in peace with the Lord.

Sr. Mary Paul was one of a kind. Because of her, countless women were able to graduate college. She was the facilitator-motivator-mentor for those of us who contracted into the Cadet program-an Accelerated Teachers Program where we took in the maximum per semester credit load for 2+ years beginning with a week off after HS graduation so we would have the necessary Education credits to teach our final 2 years in the Catholic school who sponsored our partial tuition matched by Carlow. We then caught up on the rest of the credits via Saturday and/or summer classes-QUITE intense, especially since our families would have to pay everything back if we didn't do well! Most of us were 1st generation college graduates. Without SMP, we often discuss how very different our lives would have been. Several years ago, I created a Facebook page Sr Mary Paul Tribute Page. On it you'll see pix of her cadet family as well as memories of a fabulous trip the 3 of us took to visit an alum in NM. She was in her early 90's & refused to get a wheelchair until we explained due to her age & a recent fall during a water aerobics class at JCC, that it might be a good idea! She truly was ageless & fearless.RIP, SMPBernadette Burger Skoczylas

Dear Tom and Connie and the entire Hickey Family,
This candle is lit in loving memory of the finest human being I have ever met, Sr. Mary Paul, RSM who was my third grade teacher at Carlow College Campus School in 1963. I was a student at the campus school from 1961 to 1967, grades 1 through 6. I thank God every day for the excellent education that I received from Sr. Mary Paul, RSM and all of the Sisters of Mercy. I became a teacher and I live well because of my great education and upbringing. Am sure that I challenged people!!! Know that I am deeply grateful. I loved my visits with Sr. Mary Paul in very recent years. She was the most loving, fun person with a remarkable memory. She held the Campus School Family very close to her heart! May she soar with the angels. May we, who remain, learn from this wonderful woman's life and legacy. Sending you my love and deepest condolences.

Sister Mary Paul certainly touched so many young lives and the lives of many parents she taught us all. Through Mount Mercy College Campus School and later Carlow College, she was principal when I started Kindergarten and was there again when I sent my three children to Carlow. Through her leadership and the help of several other outstanding sisters and teachers, Carlow was a very special school with much nurturing and love. I am grateful for all she did and will never forget her smile. May she be at peace. Michelle S. Fielding, Torie, Eric, and Juliet

I attended Our Lady of Mercy Academy for 12 years, I started in first grade and Sister Mary Paul was my teacher, I thought she was the most beautiful person I had ever seen. If it hadn't been for her I would not have enjoyed school so much, she made us all feel special, she treated us like little adults. I returned to the Mount a few years ago and went back and got to see her, and she was still beautiful. She was truly a wonder person and I know she will be missed. I still think of her often and praise the Sister's for a wonderful education. Rest in peace.
