Eugene - It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Mary Jane Kirkham (nee Pierce) at the age of 86. She went peacefully into the Lords arms, surrounded by her loving husband, children, and extended family on October 19th, due to complications arising from Parkinson's disease.
Mary was born to Cornelius and Hazle Pierce on August 15, 1937, in
Portland, Oregon. Her early years were marked by the family's movements across Oregon, eventually settling in Sweet Home, where Mary graduated from Sweet Home High School. On June 27, 1957 she married Jack Kirkham, a school friend with whom she reconnected after his service in the Air Force, in a quaint white Lutheran Church in
Vancouver, Washington. It was the beginning of a lifelong partnership.
Mary and Jack initially established their home in Lebanon, Oregon, where Mary worked as a bookkeeper for US Plywood in Sweet Home. Their family grew with the arrival of their daughter, Kristy, in March 1958, followed by their son, Gregory, in April 1959. Mary's home was a vibrant hub filled with family, friends, and children. She had a penchant for hosting incredible celebrations, holidays and birthdays and was incredibly welcoming. She ensured that her home was brimming with delectable food and warmth.
In 1970, Mary and Jack relocated to Eugene, where they join the partnership of Oakway Spa/Fitness Center with Dick Pierce and Dave Wilcox and jointly managed the Center together. Mary relished engaging with members, assisting them to achieve their workout goals, fostering a welcoming environment at the centers, and making connections with others. Her infectious smile and kindness endeared her to all, both employees and patrons alike, until her retirement in 1998.
Mary was a passionate sports enthusiast and loved supporting the Ducks. She enjoyed attending football, basketball, and track events. When not attending sporting events, she was entertaining guests or spending time with friends. She enjoyed the Oregon coast, and together she and Jack built a house in Yachats, where they spent most of their weekends for many years. She also loved traveling to Hawaii and embarking on many adventures.
However, the most significant aspect of Mary's life was her family and her adored grandchildren, with whom she spent as much time as possible. She leaves behind her beloved husband, Jack Kirkham of Eugene; daughter Kris Christensen (husband Phil) and son Greg Kirkham (wife Laura) of Eugene; stepdaughter Ronda Ufford (longtime partner Bill) of Lebanon; Linda Allen Templeton, whom she cherished as a daughter, (husband Charles) of Salem; three grandchildren, five step-grandchildren, eight step great-grandchildren, two step great-great-grandchildren; brother Richard Pierce of Eugene; sister Lucille Fisher of Eugene, and ten nieces and nephews. Mary was preceded in death by her father, mother, step daughter Debra Kirkham and six siblings.
Mary will be remembered for her unwavering dedication to family, her infectious joy, and her boundless kindness. Her legacy of love and warmth will continue to resonate within the hearts of those who had the privilege of knowing her.
