Mary Leamy

LEAMY _ Mary Elizabeth Mary Elizabeth Leamy passed away on Thursday, May 10, 2007 at the age of 60 years. Mary was born on March 21, 1947 in Rouyn-Noranda, Quebec to Doris and Walter Leamy. In the late 1960's she began to train for a career in nursing at the Sherbrooke General Hospital in Sherbrooke, Quebec, and had her first son in 1968. In 1970, her second son was born in Montreal. In 1971, Mary moved from Montreal to Ottawa, and then ultimately she settled in Calgary with her two boys in 1978. Mary enjoyed a long and diverse career dedicated to nursing and health care. She continued to work full time until recent months when illness interfered. Mary's most rewarding friendships and fulfilling experiences came from her work in the Calgary Health Region. She was always an artist at heart, painting and drawing prolifically throughout her life. She brought creativity and passion to her career and her art, with the two pursuits at times overlapping. For example, Mary obtained a grant from the Canada Council for the Arts, showcasing her works depicting the elderly in an institutional setting. She also earned, while working full time and raising her sons, a Bachelor of Fine Arts in painting and printmaking from the University of Calgary. Mary will be lovingly remembered by her brother Gordon Leamy and wife Janice, of Thunder Bay, Ont.; son Michael Leamy and wife Shauna, of Victoria, BC; son Patrick Leamy and wife Nadia, of Calgary; and three grandchildren, Kaylen Hamza Leamy and Devin Kareem Leamy of Calgary, and Kelsey Mary Leamy of Victoria, BC. Mary's family and friends would, on her behalf, like to thank the physicians, nurses, staff, volunteers, and the home care and palliative teams for their efforts in making her time at home and at the Tom Baker Centre comfortable and peaceful.
