With hearts full of love and sorrow, the family of Mary Lou Sassano announces her passing on October 10, 2025, in Carolina Shores, North Carolina. Born on December 3, 1936, in Cresson, Pennsylvania, Mary Lou lived a life defined by devotion to her family and an unwavering spirit that touched all who knew her.

Mary Lou was the proud mother of five children: Michele (Ron) Young, Cheryle (Audrey) Hollen, Laura (Tom) Mathews, Kimberly (Sal) Marino, and Douglas (Cyndi) Hollen. Her legacy continues through ten grandchildren, thirteen great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild. She was predeceased by her husbands Joseph Michael Sassano and Arthur Francis Hollen.

A strong and loving matriarch, Mary Lou's life revolved around her family. She was always ready with a helping hand-whether stepping in at the family restaurants or working side-by-side with her daughter Cheri remodeling and flipping homes. Her strength and generosity were constants in the lives of those she loved.

Mary Lou was also an entrepreneur in her own right. She helped establish the Original Italian Pizzeria/Restaurant in South Side, Pennsylvania-a testament to her industrious nature and commitment to building something lasting for her family.

She was more than a mother-she was a grandmother to ten, a great-grandmother to thirteen, and even a great-great-grandmother to one. Her nurturing presence spanned generations, shaping lives with love that knew no bounds.

Mary Lou Sassano was truly one special lady-the heart of her family. Though she is no longer with us in body, her love continues to guide us. Mom, your love shaped us; your strength will guide us always.

May her memory bring comfort to those who knew and loved her.

What a wonderful day for you- to be in the peaceful presence of our Lord!
We will be missing you so much, though!
Your strong and important life.. in spite of very difficult life circumstances you raised 5 wonderful people!
Thank you so much for your son, your only son, who lives on in his Dads physical image, and also in his gentle and kind demeanor.

I remember bringing my daughter to meet Gram. Cora was 6 months old. We stayed with her and Aunt Cheri for 2 weeks in North Carolina. Gram wanted to hold her and play with her. She held her like a little doll on her lap and even though she was 82 yrs old Gram got on the floor on her knees to play with Cora. We kept telling her not to hurt herself but she insisted on being on Cora´s level to play. It was so heart warming to see how loving she was with a baby.

I remember the wonderful times when I would come over and play with Kim and Doug. You always made sure we had snacks to eat. I always thought you had a beautiful smile. I thought of you often through the years.
