Former Shawnee Public School teacher, Mary Louise (Polston) May, died on October 12th, 2017 at Rose Manor Nursing Home. She was 99 years old. Mary was born on February 16th, 1918 in Bartlesville, Ok to James Edwin and Clara (Gurley) Polston. She moved from Drumright, OK with her parents to Shawnee in January 1930 and has resided there for most of that time until her death. She married Harold B. May in Shawnee, on December 9th 1939.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Harold B. May; son, Edwin "Eddie" Bartlett May; her parents J.E. and Clara Polston, and 2 great-grandchildren, Laurel and Trent Hazen. Survivors include her son, Larry May and wife Terry May of Shawnee and foster son, Ernie Sartin and wife Sherry Sartin of Meeker, OK and a daughter –in-law, Pam May of Midwest City; Twelve Grandchildren; James Edwin of TX, Tamera and Teddy Hazen of GA, Teresa May of AL, Bart May of FL, Bret and Jonathan May of AL, Keith Whitfield of TX, Amy Crossfield of NY, Casey and Jeff Machado of Bixby, OK, Stacy and Callen Stephens of Shawnee, OK, Michael and Bradley Sartin of Meeker, OK and many great-grandchildren.
Mary Louise attended Shawnee Public Schools and graduated from Shawnee High School with the class of 1935. She attended Oklahoma Baptist University and Oklahoma A&M College where she received her Bachelor of Science degree in education in 1939. Mary Louise taught at Grove Elementary School for several years. She then was employed by Shawnee Public Schools where she taught art at the Junior High until her retirement in 1980. She was a long time member of Hilltop Baptist Church. She served as a Sunday School teacher for many years and was active in various women's groups. Other memberships held were Epsilon Chapter of Alpha Delta Kappa, Pott. County Retired Educators, Wunagisa Chapter of DAR, and Pott. County Genealogical Society.
Services will be held at Resthaven Memorial Chapel on Sunday, October 15th, 2017 at 2:00 PM with the Rev. Gary Nickerson, pastor at Hilltop Baptist Church, officiating. Burial will be held at Resthaven Memorial Park.
