Mary McCombie Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Apr. 20, 2010.
Mary McCombie NORFOLK - Mary Eleanor Bruce McCombie, known to many as Mimi, died Saturday, April 17, 2010 at age 78. A resident of Norfolk, Mrs. McCombie grew up in Portsmouth, graduated from Mary Washington College in 1952, and lived in Pittsburgh from 1960 until 1994, where she taught English in the Mount Lebanon school district. Her husband, Robert "Bob" McCombie died in 2007; the two traveled together extensively, enjoying opera, cruising, and each other. Mimi McCombie was not only beloved by her family and friends, she sparked affection wherever she went. Few could outpace her, laugh more, or have more fun. She is survived by her children, Mary Eleanor "Mel" McCombie of New Haven, Conn., Bruce McCombie of Fredericksburg, Va., and Ann McCombie Landry of Dover, N.H.; as well as grandchildren, Andrew Friedberg, Ryan, Daniel and Katie McCombie, Mary and Jack Landry; and her brother, Bill Bruce of Saint Mary's, Ga. A memorial service will be held at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, 201 St. Paul's Blvd., Norfolk, Friday, April 23 at 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to All Saints Episcopal Church, Virginia Beach, or to a charity of the donor's choice. H.D. Oliver Funeral Apts., Norfolk Chapel, is handling arrangements.

What a truly wonderful woman Mimi was. We knew her for such a short time but found her to be beautiful, clever, charming, bright, stylish, curious and a lovely friend to have. We will treasure the memories of her during our world cruise and when she came to see us in England. Nicola & Bert Down.

We first met Mimi 10 years ago at the William-Sonoma store in the mall. I was teaching cooking classes & my wife was helping her and Dobie Hogan shop, boy could she and Dobie shop. We helped carry a table Mimi bought that day to her car. That started a ten year friendship which ended with me being the person at her last home to make sure Mimi, Dobie and all the rest of the Harbors Edge resdients enjoyed the food and beverage we served them every day. I will miss her kindness and her beautiful smile. Know that she is sleeping with angels.

What fun I had with your mom on Bonaire. She was always such a joy to be around and that night we went out for our "girls" drink at the bar was really a hoot. She will be missed and you both will be in my prayers and thoughts. She is in a better place now of that we can be certain. God Bless you and your family

We met on a cruise, and though we had such a
short yet sweet time together, in just those few days she found a place in our hearts. We share in your sorrow. Blanche & Sol, Dallas, TX

What a blessing to have experienced the vitality of Mimi's personality and to have been warmed by just the way she could call your name. Our prayers are with those of you she called family. Remember to laugh at the fun times you had together. She would like that.
