Mary Metzinger Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Apr. 6, 2010.
Mary Tichenor Metzinger, 45, died Good Friday April 2, 2010 at WakeMed Hospital in Cary, NC. She fought a courageous and faith-filled two year battle with cancer.
Mary was born in Houston Texas on July 15, 1964. Mary attended Saint Michael's school and Saint Agnes Academy. She was a member of Phi Mu sorority and graduated with a BBA from Southern Methodist University and later earned a MBA from The University of Saint Thomas. She was active in the Junior League of North Harris County. She worked as a financial analyst for several firms in Dallas and Houston including her family's company, Texas United, before assuming her most important role as full-time Mother. She moved to North Carolina in 2003 and became an active member of Saint Michael the Archangel Church and School in Cary, NC. She served as a faith formation instructor for second grade and enjoyed singing in the choir. She was always willing to help with activities at the school.
Mary enjoyed the outdoors whether it was a quick walk in a local park or a half-day hike in the Canadian Rockies with a two-year old in a child backpack. She also enjoyed sailing, biking, tennis, skiing, rafting, gardening and travel. There was always room for at least one dog in her home and the shelter was the best place to find one.
Mary is survived by her husband of 18 years, John Metzinger of Cary, NC; daughters, Amy and Rachel Metzinger; parents, Camille Webre Tichenor and James Hawley Tichenor of Houston; sisters, Elizabeth Greening and husband, Robert of Dallas and Iris Allen and husband, Nathan of Houston; nephews and nieces: William Greening, Camille Greening, Charles Allen and Graham Allen; mother-in-law, Carol J. Metzinger; father-in-law, William J. Metzinger; and many other extended family members.
The family would like to thank Dr. Singh and the entire staff of the Cancer Center of NC for the truly compassionate care she received during her illness. The family would also like to thank the many friends who were at Mary's side during her long fight.
Friends are invited to a visitation with the family at the Hunters Creek Chapel at Earthman Funeral Directors, 8303 Katy Freeway, Houston, TX 77024, on Wednesday, April 7, 2010 from 6:00 pm until 8:00 pm with a Rosary being recited at 7:00 pm. A Mass of Christian burial will be Celebrated 10:00 AM on Thursday, April 8, 2010 at St. Michael Catholic Church, 1801 Sage Road, Houston, TX 77056. Interment to follow at Glenwood Cemetery. A memorial service will take place in Cary on Monday April 12th at Saint Michael the Archangel Catholic Church. John, Amy, and Rachel,
I have so many fond memories of Mary from when we worked at First City, played HTA tennis, and the many, many PF Chang's birthday dinners. I so enjoyed spending time with her.

You were her life and she was so proud of you. Our thoughts and prayers are with you.

Mary made a wonderful impression on me many years ago when we met at the wedding for Rebecca and Will McLaughlin. Her warmth, generous spirit, deep loyalty to friends and family were clear immediately. I am deeply sorry for your loss and hope you feel her presence always as a guardian angel throughout your life.

Dear John, Amy and Rachel,
I was shocked when I received the word of Mary's death. I did not realize she was sick. I was out of town and unable to attend the services. Mary was a senior my first year at St. Agnes. She was a beautiful young woman, full of life and love. Mary always had a smile for everyone and made everyone feel welcomed and special. It is never easy to lose one we love, but we know that she will continue to live in the many lives she touched and nourished -- they are legion! You have my deepest sympathy, love and prayers. Her memory will live in the hearts of all of us.

The St. Agnes Community will remember Mary at a special service for our alumnae on All Saints Day, November 1. Many of the teachers that taught Mary are still at St. Agnes and remember her fondly. The St. Agnes community has been praying for all of you. May God give you strength and courage during this difficult time.
God bless you.
Love,
Sister Jane

Mary was a beautiful person inside and out. She will be missed by everyone who was fortunate enough to know her. I admire her courageous battle with cancer. I just wish I had known so I could have helped her with anything that you or your family needed. She always gave so much of herself to everything that she did.

To all of Mary's Family,

I am so very sorry to hear about Mary's passing. I went to SMU with Mary, and was in the same class (and freshman dorm) with her. I remember her as having been a very sweet and caring person. Although we had not been close, it is still shocking and sad to hear about her untimely passing.

My thoughts and prayers are with you all during this difficult time. I wish you peace and remembrance of all the wonderful moments you shared. Her spirit will live on in the lives you live.

Kind regards,

Becky Smith

I want to let you know how truly sorry I am about Mary. She always had such a sweet and gentle spirit whenever I was around her in years past. As a parent, I cannot imagine my child passing on before I do. Yet, I know one day we will be reunited in our real home with our Creator and loved ones. May God bring you comfort and peace in this time of deep sorrow.

If woman ever yet did well;
If woman ever did excell;
If woman husband e're adored;
If woman ever loved the Lord
If ever Faith and Hope and Love
In human flesh did live and move;
If all the Graces e're did meet--
In her, in Mary Tichenor Metzinger

I met Mary when I worked at Texas United and she was such a sweet person! We had a baby shower for her at the office and I was so thrilled to have brought the cake that a friend of mine made, it was decorated like a patch work baby blanket and Mary loved it!

I was so sad to hear of her passing, try to find comfort in knowing she is with our Heavenly Father and will be our Guardian Angel now.

With Deepest Sympathy,

Mary touched the lives of so many of us. Just looking at the picture of her here shows just how beautiful she was. Her love for her family and her faith in God were such a part of who she was. A smile from her and all was right. Joe and I were truly honored to have known her. Our prayers are with her husband John and their two beautiful daughters.

I had the pleasure of working with Mary here at the office and I did get to go hiking with her when we went to Carlsbad one year. She was so fun and always soft spoken and caring. I missed her when she left the office to move out of town. The last time we spoke she was very optimistic. Im sorry we have lost such a very special person. Please know she will truly be missed by so many people.
