Mary Mikkelsen Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Jan. 16 to Jan. 22, 2008.
MARY 'LORRAINE' (CUPPINI) MIKKELSEN, 86 ROCKFORD - Mary "Lorraine" (Cuppini) Mikkelsen, 86, of Rockford passed away Sunday, Jan. 13, 2008, after a brief illness. Born Aug. 21, 1921, in Dixon, the daughter of Orville and Rebecca (McDermott) Egler. She married Earl Cuppini, who preceded her in death in 1967; later married Ivan Mikkelsen in 1971. Lorraine was a bright, independent woman ahead of her time. After the death of her husband Earl, she moved with her daughter to Kailua, Kona, Hawaii, where she managed two hotel gift shops for 12 years. She also lived in California and Colorado and was an extensive traveler with a wonderful personality who made friends wherever she went. Her personal motto was "Shop till you drop!" Lorraine was very proud of her brother Robert, a member of the elite "Lt. Roy's Raiders" in the Pacific Theater during World War II. He was killed in the Philippines after many battles and heroics, receiving the Purple Heart and Silver Star. Lorraine's patriotism was apparent to all, and she was an avid reader and history buff, who was always ready to debate politics and current affairs. The family wishes to extend a heartfelt thank-you to the staff at Northwood's for their compassionate and caring support, nurses and staff at SwedishAmerican Hospital, and her very special nurses and CNAs at Rockford Supportive Living and Heritage Woods. A special thank-you to Melissa Rub and Dr. Rose Stocker. Survivors include daughter, Candice (Jim Hogan) Miller; husband, Ivan Mikkelsen; sisters, Margaret Palmeri and Julia Ann Nelson; brothers, William Egler and Joe (Carole) Egler; and numerous nieces and nephews. Predeceased by parents and her brother, Robert L. Egler. She will be missed by all. Inurnment at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 19, in Calvary Catholic Cemetery Mausoleum. Fitzgerald Funeral Home and Crematory, Mulford Chapel, 1860 S. Mulford Road, Rockford, assisted the family. Please extend online condolences at www.fitzgeraldfh.com.

Candi,
My warmest thoughts are with you and your mom. She was a true independant woman in a time when that was rare. I always admired her spirit, and you are both in my thoughts. Hope to see you soon.

Candi, I believe that she got to heaven excited and ready for that party to greet her, and it was in full swing. I can hear her gusty laugh! No more pain, just happiness with God, the angels and saints! We all loved her and wish you the best!
