MARY (O'CONNOR HICKS)
Long time resident of Swissvale, died peacefully Sunday, July 13, 2003; wife of the late George A. Petty; loving mother of Paul Hicks (Dorothy) NY, Marianne "Sissy" Hicks, NJ, Bernice Fisher (Rege) Penn Hills, Judy Rotthoff (Wade) MI, Linda Morrow, Swisshelm Park, Terry Hardin, Swissvale, George Jr., (Patrice) Swissvale, Lorraine (Raino) Rudge (Leo) Swissvale, and the late infant John; Special aunt of Pat Connelly; preceded in death by her brothers, James, Thomas (Ebby), Patrick (Hon) O'Connor, great-granddaughter, Mackenzie Whitney; also survived by 13 grandchildren, five great grandchildren, Ron Morrow, Bill Hardin, four nieces and three nephews; Mary was awarded "All Around Female Athlete of the Year" for Swissvale High School, 1936; was past President of Women's Auxiliary of Veterans of Foreign Wars, Swissvale, Post 6679; and co-organized Michigan Avenue's Block Party for 25 years. She also volunteered at Falk Clinic, Braddock Hospital, Swissvale Meals on Wheels and VA Hospital Highland Drive, where she was named " 1990 Volunteer of the Year". In Mary's high school yearbook, she was described as "Pleasantly jovial and ever gymnastic", and all those who knew her would agree this description lasted her a lifetime. Friends received Wed., & Thurs., 2-4 & 7-9pm at the THOMAS L. NIED FUNERAL HOME, INC. 7441 Washington St., Swissvale. Mass of Christian Burial Fri., at 11am in St. Anselm Church, Word of God Parish. In lieu of flowers, family suggests that contributions be made to G.P. Fund 1002, VA Pittsburgh Healthcare System, 118 V-H, 7180 Highland Drive, Pgh PA 15206.

George and Family;

So sorry about the loss of your mother. Never let your grief overtake the wonderful memories of your mother, remember her as she lived...a strong outgoing community oriented person.

So sorry to read of Mary's death.But reading about her brought back many memories when my sisters Cecelia, Janey, and Pat Mckee, and I lived in what was then called N. Homestead.We all played togethe as kids.
