Mary Roll, 96, south Kansas City, MO, passed away peacefully Sunday evening, October 17, 2004, at her home in Grand Court. She resided in south Kansas City for more than six decades. Mrs. Roll was born December 5, 1907, in Glenvil, NE, to John Haley McCune and Minnie Deppe McCune. She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Irvin and Arch McCune; her husband of 58 years, Harold Crown Roll; and her son-in-law, Gerard (Jerry) Kenney. Mary received a BA degree from Grand Island (NE) College, now Sioux City (SD) University. She earned graduate credits in library science and education from Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland; University of Colorado at Boulder and UMKC. A lifelong lover of books, the English language and the arts, Mary delighted in sharing that knowledge. She began a teaching career in Juniata, NE. As Honors English and Latin teacher at Southeast High School in Kansas City for 15 years, retiring in 1973, Mary was several times voted teacher of the year by the student body. She is to be cremated and her ashes buried at West Lawn Memorial Cemetery in Grand Island, NE, to repose alongside her husband, Crown, whom she marred at Old Christ Church, Alexandria, VA, in 1935. The Order of Eastern Star Acadia Chapter 39, Hastings, NE, will perform a resolution of respect ceremony honoring Mary, a member for 66 years. Mary is survived by daughters, Alexandra Virginia Kenney, journalist, of Jersey City, NJ, and Meredith Ann Quitno, music teacher, of Agawam, MA; grandchildren, Dr. Kirsten J. Whelan of Ukiah, CA, Alexander J. Quitno, Suffolk, CT, and Kathleen M. Quitno, West Suffield, CT; and great-grandsons, Jack and Noah Whelan and Lukas A. Quitno. My mother will be my strength and inspiration for the rest of my life. When I play my violin, when I teach school, when I love my children and adore my grandchildren, when I create a comfy home or celebrate the holidays for my family --- she will be in my heart.
