Our loving Mother, Mary Owens Hume Schermerhorn, passed away peacefully on May 7, 2015. Mary struggled with dementia in her later years, but her great intellect, tremendous wit, and love of her family always shined through. Mary was born in Louisville, Kentucky on June 28, 1921. She is preceded in death by her parents, William Garvin Hume and Caroline DeButts Gray Hume, her siblings, Lucy H. Moore and William G. Hume, her son, Stephen W. Langston, and Claire M. Schermerhorn. Mary is also survived by many great-grandchildren, and nieces and nephews as well. Mary distinguished herself in many ways during her lifetime. She loved family history and instilled that love in her children and grandchildren. While still raising her children, she was graduated Summa Cum Laude from Incarnate Word College with both Bachelor and Master degrees, taught learning disabled children, and was recognized as a Point of Light for her work with Child Advocates of San Antonio (CASA). Other awards included the JC Penney Golden Rule, San Antonio Woman of the Year, and Alumni of the Year Awards. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, May 12th from 6:00pm to 7:00pm with recitation of the Rosary at 7:00pm at St. Pius X Catholic Church, 3303 Urban Crest Dr. A funeral Mass will be held on Wednesday, May 13th at 11:00am at St. Pius X Catholic Church. Mary will be interred at Cave Hill Cemetery in Louisville, Kentucky at a future date. My sympathies to the family. You were my neighbor on Woodcrest when I was a very small child. I remember playing with Edith and Debbie Towery.

Thank you Granny Gumdrop for all the joy you brought to my life! I have so many good memories of times with you. Your house was where I first went trick-or-treating, played an Atari, got to play with your "indoor dog", Dundee, and could use so many rose smelling soaps and lotions! :) I will cherish the many memories from staying at your house during high school on late game days. Thank you for the amazing stories, and the history you shared with me and passed on to me.
Your wit did indeed always shine through.
Please give my mom a huge hug for me....I miss her dearly, and it makes me smile to think of you together. She devoted so much time to you during her last years on this earth, and I know it must be a wonderful reunion. God bless you. Love,

Daren Hawkins

She was a wonderful Mother-in-law and gave me the greatest gift ever, my wife Paulette! Happy Mother's Day as you run and play with our son, William.
Take good care of him.
