Mary Skirvin Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Dec. 7, 2014.
Mary F. Skirvin, age 94 of Madison, passed away on Saturday, December 6, 2014 at the Beech Grove Meadows in Beech Grove, IN. On the 18th of February 1920, she was born in Clark County, KY, to George and Nettie (Stevens) McEntire. On February 5, 1938, she and Harry Elbert Skirvin were joined in marriage. During their marriage, they had two sons, William and Leslie.
Mary worked at the Vevay shoe factory for several years. After her sons moved from home, she moved to Zainesville, OH. She resided there for approximately ten years working at housekeeping, baby sitting, sewing and alterations.
In the early 70?s, she returned to Indiana and lived in Madison. She took at job at Meyer?s garment factory and then worked as a licensed practical nurse for the Old Mayfield?s Nursing Home until her retirement. She was a member of the Grace Baptist Church. Mary moved to Indianapolis in 2001 to be near her sons. It was there she lived until illness required her to live at the Meadows Nursing Home in Beech Grove.
Much of Mary?s family has preceded her in death. Her husband, Harry, died in 1978, her youngest son, Leslie in May 2012 and William in April of this year. She had three brothers who have also passed, Joe B. McEntire, George McEntire and James McEntire; two sisters, Minnie Beach and Cleo Scott.
She leaves behind her two daughters in Law, Mary Lou Skirvin and Karen Skirvin both of Indianapolis; her four grandchildren, William Otis Skirvin, Melissa Skirvin Ritter and Monty Lee Skirvin all of Indianapolis and Sheila Skirvin of Greenwood. Also surviving are seven great-grandchildren, David, Christopher, Aaron, Cheyenne, Charles, Coy and Patty; sister, Anna Davis of Zephryhills, FL and several nieces and nephews.
Mary was a very good cook, inheriting this from her mother, and took much pride in keeping her house in order. Throughout her life, she enjoyed cooking and wanted whoever came to her house to sit down and eat something. She was also a very good seamstress and sewed many of her own clothes and many for others. She enjoyed watching TV in her retirement years. Feeding and watching birds in her backyard gave her much pleasure. But she especially enjoyed feeding and watching a mother ground squirrel who lived next to her patio when she lived in her apartment.
Mary?s presence was felt by all and she will be missed by many. God Bless you Mary and may you rest in peace. Your work here is done.
Visitation will be on Friday, December 12th from 6:00pm until 8:00pm and then Saturday, December 13th from 12:00pm until 2:00pm at the Woodlawn Family Funeral Centre at 2800 Michigan Road in Madison. Pastor Joel Almaroad will conduct services at 2:00pm at the funeral followed by burial at Springdale Cemetery. Memorials can be made to the Grace Baptist Church through the funeral home.
