Mary Skonberg Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jul. 21, 2025.
Mary M. Skonberg, 72, passed away on April 21, 2025, in Kenosha, Wisconsin. Born on April 26, 1952 in Chicago, Illinois, she lived a life defined by boldness, creativity, and an unwavering spirit.

Mary was a trailblazer early in her career when she worked her way through the ranks to become a female line supervisor at Centel Corporation, a telecommunications company. In a field traditionally dominated by men at that time, she earned respect through skill, intelligence and determination-qualities honed while growing up with her brothers and holding her own among the guys. Her leadership and advocacy for gender equality not only advanced her own career but also opened doors for countless women who followed in her footsteps. She met many lifelong friends at Centel, including the love of her life, Jim Nalker.

Outside of work, Mary was a woman of many passions and talents. She had a deep love for sewing and quilt making, crafting pieces that reflected both skill and heart. Her collection of witches was as whimsical as it was unique-a testament to her playful spirit. Whether she was fishing on a quiet lake, hunting in the north woods, riding snowmobiles through winter trails, or racing cars on summer tracks, Mary embraced adventure with gusto: "If you don't make dust, you eat dust."

Mary's musical side was equally vibrant. She played piano with joy and found delight in all kinds of music. She cherished conversations with her many loved ones-sharing colorful stories that were sometimes true and sometimes just true enough to entertain. Her tales were legendary among those who knew her best.

She was fiercely loyal-a devoted wife, sister, daughter, step-mother, aunt, and friend. She adored all of her pets, especially her dog Maggie, and cats Morgan, Annie and also Maggie. Sometimes called Ms. Fix-it, Mary could fix just about anything with her hands and wasn't afraid to get dirty doing it. Yet she also loved dressing up when the occasion called for it-proving that toughness and elegance could coexist beautifully.

Mary spent a lifetime caring for those around her wherever she lived. She is now at rest and in peace with her husband Jim, along with her brother Jim, her father Ted, and mother Marge. She is survived by many who honor and celebrate her memory, including her brothers, sister-in-law, her stepsons, their wives and their children, her nephew, nieces and their children, and her many cousins and friends.

Mary's legacy is one of courage, laughter, loyalty, and zest for life. May her memory bring comfort to those who knew and loved her.

Mary is and always will be so very loved and missed. She was an amazing step-mom, mother in law, and grandma. Her quick wit and sense of humor always had us laughing. Her no-nonsense beliefs and way of life and "get it done" attitude was an inspiration to us all. She will forever be in our hearts.

My deepest sympathy to Mary's Family. Mary and I became close friends in the early 1970's working at Centel. We stayed in touch through the years, on long calls when she was in Three Lakes, and then, weekly calls and get togethers once she moved to Kenosha. We shared good times and those not so good, always there to support each other. She was very independent and decisive about many things, always a lively conversation! I miss her very much, rest in peace dear friend until we are together again.

My family moved to Edison Park when I was just starting 2nd grade at St Juliana´s, September, 1960. I met Mary on my way walking to school and we became instant, best friends. Our journey continued at St Pats and beyond. My husband, Tom, Mar and I were all St J classmates. A childhood friend is more than just a person we grew up with. They are part of our story. Their loss leaves an emptiness that cannot be filled. Missing you deeply dear friend (or Roadrunner...Mar´s nickname back then. I was Shade.) I will miss our long phone chats talking about all the fun, crazy things we did. And so sorry we never did get to do our Ferris Bueller Day. Until we meet again Mar...
Love and prayers

Mary and I took piano lessons from an older woman in Edison Park who taught piano in her home. Mary was 10 times more talented than I. Mary and I went to St. Juliana and became good friends in 7th and 8th grade. I just recently discovered that she lived a town away from me in Wisconsin and along with Nancy and Debbie, we were planning a lunch with Mary. I was so saddened the lunch did not come to be. I wish we had stayed in touch all of these many years. Rest in peace, dear Mary.

Mary was such a wonderful woman. She was intelligent, witty with a good amount of sass and opinion. She was "Gram-Mary" to our son Jimmy and she made him feel so loved and special. We will all miss her dearly.
