Albert Menduni Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Feb. 6 to Feb. 7, 2014.
Menduni Dr. Albert Michael Menduni, died on February 4, 2014 from complications of back surgery. Dr. Menduni was born November 29, 1945 in Columbus, Ohio. He attended undergraduate school at John Carrol University and medical school at Case Western Reserve University, both in Cleveland, Ohio. Lieutenant Commander Menduni retired from the Navy after treating sailors and marines in the Philippines during the Vietnam War. Seeking warmer weather, Al moved his family from Ohio to Florida in 1980. In addition to his practice of internal medicine, Dr. Menduni ran The Addiction Recovery Center and performed flight physicals. He was the Chief Medical Officer and served on the board of Capital Regional Medical Center. He was a pilot, scuba diver, photographer, astronomer, philosopher, amateur quantum physicist and lover of gadgets. He was deeply compassionate and possessed an enduring faith. Albert was a robust man who loved his patients and awed his peers with his extent of knowledge but was primarily an Italian family man. He enjoyed Indian guides and science projects with his son, Mario and Indian princesses and spring break trips with his daughter, Gina. He adored his wife, Margie, whom he married in 1969 in Youngstown, Ohio. In addition to his wife, he leaves behind his son, Mario of Boston; and his daughter, Gina of Los Angeles; brothers, Carmen (Shelly) and Louis (Sandi), both of Columbus, Ohio. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Good Shepherd Catholic Church on Saturday, February 8 at 1 p.m. The family will greet friends, former patients, and colleagues in the Parish Hall after Mass. Interment will take place at a later date in Columbus, OH. Memorial contributions in Albert's memory may be made to The Gina Menduni Graduate School Fund and/or The Katie Kavanagh Disability Van Maintenance Fund. Checks should be made out to Margaret Menduni and sent to Charlotte Moore, C.P.A at 2627 Mitcham Dr., Tallahassee, Fl 32308.

Just learned of Al's death in the current John Carroll alumni magazine. Al was a good friend at JCU since first week of freshman year. He was a good person then, and it's no surprised how well he did and how well he is thought of. Condolences to his family.

I was saddened to hear yesterday from my current doctor about Dr. Menduni's passing. He was truly a wonderful doctor, one of a kind. I got tetanus in 2002 and Dr. Menduni was the only doctor willing to take me on. He was there with me and my family through all the struggles. I cried when he stopped practicing and cried again when I heard the news about his passing. He was wonderful to me and I will never forget that. Rest in Peace!

It is with sadness that I learned of the passing of Al Menduni; and yet I celebrate that he has gone home to the Lord. Dr. Menduni was my mother's doctor and she called him her “best friend.” The first time she referred to him that way, I was a little hurt because I thought I was her best friend. Then I realized and appreciated that if it wasn't for him, she would have passed away years earlier. Other specialists had given up on her; he never did, ensuring she had many more happy years. Additionally, my son David and Mario Menduni became best of friends, and I know personally the love he had for his Dad. Margie, Mario and Gina, our hearts go out to you; thank you for being a great example of a family's love for each other.

I counted Al amongst my dearest friends ever since he and Margie invited a rookie surgeon and his wife over for dinner in 1984. He was an amazing intellect and had a volume control stuck on "10". But, that was Al. He and I spent countless hours discussing mutual patients, trends in Medicine and scientific subjects that had nothing to do with medicine. Recently he reached out to me to encourage me about an illness I am dealing with. As typical, he did not mention his back problems, although I was well versed in his woes. Goodbye Al, I loved you like a brother.

Margie, Gina & Mario wouldn't you know that after all of us being together that I would be in Italy when Al made his transition to heaven! You know how much I will miss him. He was a true friend and a mentor. By far the brightest man that I have ever known and Margie he loves you more than life itself. You were there for him even in his darkest hours at the end. My family has been privileged to be part of the Menduni family for 22 years and we will be there still. Albert was a deeply spiritual man and he is waiting for us in heaven

Our family has lost a wonderful and brilliant man. To my aunt Margie, and cousins Mario and Gina, my deepest love and condolences sent your way. What great memories I have of your dad, especially his deep, bellowing laugh and quirky sense of humor. Grandma just loved and respected him so, so much. He was a wealth of knowledge to all of us and seemed to so graciously accept our relentless requests for medical advice. He was truly the most gentle giant I knew. Love and prayers to all of you.
Always,
Annette

A larger than life personality. I studied and worked with him when I was working on my nurse practitioner degree. He was always so helpful to me and I learned so much from him. I will forever be grateful for knowing him and studying with him. God Bless his soul and family. We often talked about growing up in Columbus, Ohio, and lunch at Lazarus department store. A lot of wonderful memories.

Albert was the doctor to my entire family until he retired. When they started the privacy practice notification stuff I would tell him not to bother because you could hear his booming voice all the way over at CRMC! He made us laugh in the most tragic times. When he was computing a dose of heavy narcotic pain killers for my husband when he had cancer my husband questioned the dose Al was prescribing. After 1-3 "Are you sure that's not too much? How will I know if I OD?", Albert said, "Son, if you see a bright white light and lots if dead relatives, you'll know I screwed up BIG time!" If you can believe it...we laughed through cancer. Al, I will think of you fondly forever!

It's not often you look forward to visiting a doctor but when the time to renew my airman's medical certificate came up. I cheerfully went to Al to hear him sing and enjoy his robust nature. Terrific guy.

Albert, you will surely be missed. I was introduced to you by my Mother, Barbara. She adored you and your family. She just text me. She is standing in St Peter's Square in Vatican City. She is thinking of you and saying prayers for your family. Your Wife is a beautiful person and I have enjoyed spending time with her. Until we meet again.
