Mary ZIPP Obituary

Published by Edmonton Journal from Sep. 17 to Sep. 18, 2014.
ZIPP, Mary
(nee Sorochan)
November 11, 1923 – September 14, 2014
Grateful for her long and full life, the family is sad to announce the passing of Mary Zipp on September 14, 2014. Mary embraced life and all that it had to offer; a lifetime blessed with "health, wealth and happiness". Mom's greatest passion was her family and we will continue to feel her influence in our lives.
Mary will be forever loved and remembered by, in her words, 7 beautiful daughters and 1 handsome son; Margaret Kavich, Shirley Gretzan, Pat Jeffrey, Elaine Nicholls, Debby Poburan, Sonya Parris, Brenda Campbell and Terry Zipp. She was cherished by her daughter-in-law Patti Duffy and her 6 sons-in-law Ernie Jeffrey, Darcy Poburan, Peter Parris, Grant Campbell and the late Billy Kavich and the late Peter Nicholls. Mary's legacy also includes her 21 loving grandchildren; Carolyn, Valerie, Jackie, Bernice, Tara, Cody, Brianne, Chayse, Shaun, Shane, Ruby, Lincoln, Dallas, Dustin, Landon, Jake, Stephen, Micheal, Katie, Cole and Noah, as well as 26 great-grandchildren and 6 great-great-grandchildren. Mom was the oldest of 10 and was predeceased by all but 3 sisters, Kathleen Nebuluk, Olga (Paul) Scherba, and Betty Gizowski. She was predeceased by her husband Morris in 1986.
Our dear mother and Baba lived a wonderful long life of almost 91 years. Our inheritance is a childhood rich with memories of love, support and good home cooking, and a family forever forged by these experiences. Baba instilled in us her own values of hard work, generosity, integrity and a strong sense of family. She had incredible strength and determination and always said "it's mind over matter, and if you don't mind it doesn't matter". Mom was happiest in the company of her children and grandchildren, enjoying laughter, good food, dybosia, and making sure everyone was well looked after. While keeping tradition and our Ukrainian heritage alive, she was also game to try anything new and was always up for an adventure. Mom was forever eager to celebrate life's many joys.
Prayer service Thursday, September 18 at 7:00 p.m. at Westlawn Funeral Home, 16310 Stony Plain Road, Edmonton, visitation 1 hour prior. Funeral service Friday, September 19 at 11:00 a.m. at Ukrainian Orthodox Cathedral of St. John, 10951 107 Street, Edmonton, with Reverend Father Cornell Zubritsky officiating, followed by Interment in Westlawn Memorial Gardens.
In lieu of flowers, donations will be accepted for a Memorial Park Bench in dedication to BABA ZIPP.

I met Baba 15 years ago when my sister started dating her grandson Shane. After that I was always welcome at the family functions. When you came through the door at one of these functions there would be people everywhere. Baba was so petite you couldn't see her at first, but you could hear her. When she saw you she would call your name and greet you with a kiss and a thousand watt smile like you were one of her own children. She would look up at you with those sparkling eyes and you knew you were loved and special. I will deeply miss those moments. Thank you Baba for all the laughter, amazing food, and your wonderful family.

Sincerest condolences to the Zipp family from one from the old neighbourhood of Jasper Place. I remember the Zipp girls mostly Deb as I went to Youngstown and Britannia and then JP. Debbie Zipp went to Brownies at Ebenezer United Church just a few steps away from where she lived. Here's wishing all of the Zipp family the deepest of condolences. Sincerely Deb Hageman Boelstler.

My name is Glen Kyle. I work for a utility company for which I would enter into her house on a regular basis, so as to provide a meter reading. I had taken a course with one of her daughters and so I got to know her pretty well over a six year or so period. I will tell you unabashedly; that lady had more life and spunk, and more love in her heart than Mother Theresa. She was so proud of all of them; and was the first to have me in for whatever she was busily baking at the time. Didn't take much at all to please her; just the companionship of her family. She always was smiling. Never would set it aside for nothing. She was tough, not in a boastful way, but in a quiet and peaceful way. She believed very dearly in God, and just wanted all her family to find peace with themselves. I hope her dream came true. Rest easy Mary...God Bless You.

Iam deeply sorry to hear about the passing of Mary. She was my grandmother's (Mary Tesar) best friend. She would call my grandmother at least twice a day only to talk for hours. This meant so much to my grandmother and I thank her for being such a great friend. My deepest condolences are with the family during this time.
