Marya Sieminski Obituary

Marya Sieminski (1949-2025)

Marya was a trailblazer, known for her sharp intellect and confident advocacy. Born in Pennsylvania, she graduated from Everett High School in Washington state in 1967. At a time when women comprised only 4% of students, she earned a scholarship to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and graduated with a degree in Political Science. This marked the beginning of her impactful career in Michigan politics and public service.

Marya held several significant roles, including deputy director of the Michigan Department of Management and Budget, chief deputy clerk in Detroit, and executive director of the Michigan Democratic Party during the 1988 campaign. She later attended Wayne State University Law School, joining the Michigan bar in 1995, and practiced law at the Sam Berstein law firm in Detroit until her retirement. She continued to volunteer with campaigns and elections post-retirement.

She met her beloved husband, Paul, through their shared passion for politics. Paul preceded her in death after 36 years of marriage. An avid reader of mysteries and fan of mystery TV, Marya also loved puzzles and was a gifted fiber artist, creating quilts and a unique stuffed animal for each of her grandchildren.

Marya is survived by her siblings, David Sieminski and Joan Sharp, Peter and Doreen Sieminski, and Denis Sieminski and Carol Dowling. She is also survived by her step-children, Mary and Tim Curby, David and Megan Massaron, her six grandchildren, and four Sieminski nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that a charitable contribution be made to Detroit Public Radio Station WDET (https://wdet.org/support/). A private family remembrance will be held at a later time.
