Mason Mallory Lykes

Lykes, Mason Mallory, 84, died Nov. 13, 2006, at her home in Tampa, FL.

Mason was born May 28,1922, in Lawrenceville, VA, the daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Frank Nicholson Mallory. She attended Brunswick County Schools, the Collegiate School and the College of William and Mary. During World War II she worked at Camp Pickett, Va., where she met her husband, Charles Parkhill Lykes of Houston, TX. They were married Dec. 18, 1946, and made their home in Florida. As a private pilot, Mason was a member of flying clubs and competed in national and international women's air races including the Powder Puff Derby and the Angel Derby. Mason was a trustee of the Lowry Park Zoological Society.

She was preceded in death by her husband. Survivors include her sister, Julia Smith, her children, Mason Mallory Lykes (David Belcher) of Tampa, FL; Genevieve Parkhill Lykes Dimmitt (Lawrence) of Clearwater, FL; Susan Wall Lykes Mueller (John) of Tampa, FL; Charlotte Mayo Lykes Jorgensen (Richard) of Boulder; Charles Parkhill Lykes Jr. (Kathryn) of Lake Placid, FL; and Mayo Lykes (Susan) of Jackson Hole, WY; and seven grandchildren.

Funeral Services will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Nov. 16th at St. Andrew's Episcopal Church in Tampa; burial will be at the family cemetery in Brooksville, FL. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions in Mason's memory to the Lykes Florida Wildlife Fund at the Lowry Park Zoo Foundation, Lifepath Hospice, or St. Andrew's Episcopal Church, all of Tampa.
