Matthew Allison Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on May 22, 2020.
Matthew Douglas Allison, 51, of Ankeny, IA died on May 22, 2020, at the MercyOne Hospice House in Johnston, Iowa following a fierce 14-month battle with metastatic colon cancer. Matt was born to Mike and Mary Ellen Allison on October 16, 1968. He grew up with four brothers – Jon, Tim, Pat and Chris – in Rockford, IA and often spoke of how he had the "perfect childhood" playing outside, riding bikes and making mischief with his brothers and their friends. Matt graduated from Iowa State University and earned his law degree from the University of Iowa. He spent most of his career at Nationwide Insurance in Des Moines where he was loved and respected by many colleagues. We thank Matt's friends at Nationwide for their support throughout his battle with cancer. Matt embodied the best of what it meant to be a family man, deeply devoted to his wife Kristi and their three children Max, Evy and Anna. Matt simply loved being a dad. Matt had a quiet presence and a witty sense of humor. He was an avid Iowa Hawkeye football fan and season ticket holder. He loved sailing and being on the water at Clear Lake. Matt was a member of Our Lady's Immaculate Heart Catholic Church in Ankeny. His faith carried him during his cancer battle. Thank you to Father Michael and Sister Susan for their love and assistance. Thank you to Matt's surgical oncologist Dr. Jan Franko, oncologist Dr. Christian Schultheis and the dozens of nurses and medical professionals who tirelessly fought his cancer alongside him. Thank you to the palliative care team and the Johnston Hospice House for their loving care as Matt transitioned from this earth. Matt is survived by his wife Kristi, children Max, Evy and Anna, mother Mary Ellen, brothers Jon (Karen), Tim (Gerri), Pat (Sheila) and Chris (Kristy), and many nieces, nephews and extended family. Matt's father Mike preceded him in death and met Matt at the gates of heaven. A public visitation will be Tuesday, May 26, from 5 to 7 p.m. at Ankeny Memorial Funeral Home. A prayer service will follow the visitation at 7 p.m. The funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, May 27, at Ankeny Memorial Funeral Home. Due to COVID requirements, the prayer service and funeral Mass will be private. The funeral Mass will be live streamed on the Memorial Services of Iowa Facebook page. I just found out that Matt has died.

He and I were friends many years ago at school. He was as nice and decent a person that I have ever met.

I have not seen or talked to him in many, many years, but this will be a tearful evening for me.

I was deeply saddened to learn of Matt's death. I worked with Matt at Pharmacists Mutual Insurance in Algona, Iowa, for a few years. He was a gentle giant. I will always remember his quiet manner. I had the pleasure to also work with two of Matt's brothers (Jon and Chris) - great men!

Please keep the memories alive for the entire family - especially the three children. My heart and prayers go out to all of you!

Matt was my manager for a bvv ruef time while I worked for Nationwide. He was one of the best managers I ever had the pleasure of working with. He was firm but fair. He always was quick witted and smiled often. He had a heart of gold. He was so excited about getting married and beibg a daddy. He will be missed greatly by any but will always be loved, honored and respected Go rest high on that mountain Matt, your work on earth is done. May you rest peacefully in the loving arms of God our Father.

I came to know Matt through work at Nationwide. Matt was such a kind and friendly person and always had a smile when you would meet him. I am deeply saddened to learn of his passing but know that he is with the Lord now and feels no pain.

Matt was one of the first people I would seek out when visiting the Des Moines office. He was witty and smart and just generally a joy to visit. I appreciated listening to him talk about family which he obviously loved so much. My heart breaks for their pain but hope the lessons he imparted and memories he created with them last forever.

I worked with Matt when I was at Allied/Nationwide and we would have many discussions around the Iowa football team as well as work related things. He was one of the kindest people I have ever had the good fortune to know. Heaven has gained a beautiful soul. He will be missed. My thoughts and prayers with the family.

We are part of the OLIH family. The Allison family worshiped right across the aisle. Matt was a cross bearer. I think of him as gentle giant and a very loving father. Kristi, Max, Evy, and Anna, you are in our prayers.
Peace,

Matt and I worked together and had some good conversations about faith and his illness. My heart aches at this time but I also know the we are Easter people and this is not the final chapter. May the light of Christ shine upon Matt and his loved ones.

Very sorry for your loss! I knew Matt from work. Your obituary was right on. He was witty. I loved his sense of humor. He had a calm and positive outlook on everything. He was smart! I respected him and his opinions. I seemed to always run into him in the skywalk walking during lunch. Too young! I'll miss him.
