I met you when I was 12 years old in the townhouses Bayview and York Mills. We had a lot of fun back, then lost touch reconnected years later went to lunch. You always had such a kind warm welcome no matter how much time had passed
You were my penpal in Hawaii and hearing and seeing all the lives that you touched, my friend does not surprise me as you were such a good soul.. I know you are doing beautiful things wherever you go! Catch those waves and ride them wherever they take you, Matt Christensen

Matt was my brother from another mother. We met in Lake Placid, NY over 30 years ago and became close friends right away. We lived and trained together, even though he was a Canuck and I was on the US team we worked together going over hours of video to improve each other´s skills. Matt was a good athlete but the hours we spent going over video in the early days I believe is what paved the way for Matt to be an amazing coach! He had an incredible passion for coaching and knew how to get the best out of his athletes, his resume speaks for itself. He was a people person with a wicked sense of humor. I can´t ever remember Matt getting down on himself for anything, he was always positive, he lived life to the fullest, and is why this is so hard to write now that he is gone. All we have are our memories and that is what I will cherish forever. Traveling all over the world, late nights in placid, going to Toronto for Marcus´s figure skating party, playing spoons in Fortress, introducing me to a few Canadien bands The Hopping Penguins and One, laughing for hours over The Jerkey Boys, hearing about his latest adventures with Red Bull, hearing Matt talk about surfing in Hawaii, these are the memories I will keep for the rest of my life. I´m going to miss hearing the updates my friend, I´m gonna miss hearing you say "What´s up chief?" I´m going to miss you my brother! My sincere condolences to Cara and the whole Christensen family.

When I heard of Matt´s passing, it hit me hard. My heart hurts knowing we lost a good man. Freestyle family is forever. A bond is created that is so special,
that no matter where each of our paths have taken us, that bond never fades. Matt was a
great team-mate & friend. Funny, kind, & easy going. I could always count on him for a good card game, a movie to watch in idle times, & of course the challenge he took on of getting me to blush within seconds. He was a pro at that, as many of us know. It always made me laugh. I will cherish my memories of Matt. My latest being a number of years back in Maui, sharing a surf session and a beer afterwards. You will be greatly missed Matt. My deepest condolences to his family, wife and to the many friends he has around the world. Rest In Peace Matt

My deepest sympathies to Matt´s family. Matt always had a way of making people smile . I met him in 2001 while working with the Australian freestyle ski team . I have many fond and funny memories of Matt; from organizing arm wrestling competitions in China when there was nothing else to do ( he couldn´t help himself he kept going until he finally won!) - to surfing in Maui . Maui was his happy place and he was happy to finally have more time there . He always called or dropped by my office when he was in Whistler and never failed to make me laugh ! I had not had a lot of contact with Matt in the recent few years but he always messaged me on my birthday and again at the end of October this year we chatted and he told me he just got promoted at Redbull and was loving living in Maui . Matt´s fun loving spirit made the world a brighter place for everyone he came into contact with and he will be missed by many - gone but never forgotten RIP Matt xoxo

Although I am deeply saddened by the sudden loss of our friend Matt, it is comforting to see and read about his positive influence onto his many loved ones. I was fortunate to train, travel, and compete in Freestyle alongside of Matt during much of 1990´s-2010´s and have many great memories of him. Even after his joining Red Bull, Matt was great at keeping in touch with sending a funny note with an attached video of some silly acrobatic nonsense. Matt was great at bringing a smile and laughter to someone in need. I am a better person for knowing him. My thoughts go out to his family and those grieving his loss.

Becoming a good friend of Matt´s right from day one, starting about 30 years ago when we first roomed together at a ski competition, was the beginning of one of the best and most rewarding friendships of my life. Starting with my introduction to Matt´s super nutritious breakfast ritual of consuming his signature cholesterol sandwich - a foot long baguette adorned with several types of mystery meats, cheese and mayo, all squeezed from a tube, followed up by polishing off a 6 pack of coke - only to learn a short time later at a ski team physical testing camp that Matt would set 2 national records for VO2 max and endurance scores - a real head-shaker. Matt would go on though to prove he had far more athletic and other talents than just that.
We were very fortunate to be able to travel together for many years after that with lots of adventures, ski competitions and aerial ski acrobatic shows and then following that, keeping in close touch and planning our next get together on Maui. My wife Nikki and I tried other islands and getaways, but we kept longing to return to Maui, with seeing Matt as the main reason why and then a few years ago when we first met Cara with Matt, we just didn´t want to let more than a year pass before we could see them again.
Matt led a very full and wonderful life with so many great accomplishments and adventures and most of all through all the people he met and touched in some meaningful and positive way - he was an enduring lifter of spirits and provider of encouragement.
He loved Cara and his family very much; although, often away from them, they were his source of independence, strength, confidence and good humour.
We were blessed to be able to visit Matt and Cara this year after travel restrictions loosened and spent some cherished days and evenings together. During one of these evenings Cara looked at Matt and I together and exclaimed we were Fred and Barney - she nailed it, two grown men always acting like children when together - bosom buddies, close friends and lifelong pals.
We are thinking of Cara, Marcus and his wife Kara and son Chase and Matt´s Mom and Dad daily, hoping that all the great stories, reminiscing and complements about Matt and what he meant to so many people around the world and with the upcoming celebration, that they will find comfort in knowing that Matt did so much good for the time he was here.
Love you Matt - Nikki and I will surely have you with us on future adventures.

This was in our first year working together at Red Bull Matt, we did a project at Cirque in Vegas.
You were my "partner in crime" at work for 10 years, always ready for a prank, joke, or an amazing idea to make our athletes the best they can be. Thank you for also helping me be the best version of myself, by being around you. I miss you tremendously. My thoughts and prayers are with Cara and Matt's Family.

Sending my deepest condolences to Cara, Matt’s family and Matt’s friends. I’ve known Matt and worked closely with him at Red Bull and on other projects for the last 8+ years. Matt was special. He had a deep passion for helping both the professional athletes around him AND his ecosystem of friends become better versions of themselves. Matt was incredibly dedicated to every detail that he could bring to the table to make those around him function at a better level. He also happened to possess one of the best senses of humor I’ve ever known. There literally was not a week that would go by where I wouldn’t receive hilarious texts, photos, etcall with the clear goal of bringing laughter into my life and at just the right time. Over the last 3 years, Matt and I grew incredibly close and I valued every conversation I had with him. The best version I saw of Matt was after he got married to Cara. I will miss him dearly and will always be mindful of the mark he left on my life. He was passionate, authentic, tenacious, funny, fiercely loyal, sensitive, and kind—the ideal traits of a perfect coach, husband, son, brother and friend. I’m deeply saddened by his passing, but will forever be reminded of outstanding fun and countless funny memories with him. Until we meet again, my dear friend, thank you for the mark you left on the lives of so many. I’m a better person because of you! Rest easy, brother.

Dear Cara, Jenn, Bob and Marcus. My Mum passed on the sad news of Matthew's death the other day. I was so very shocked to hear it. I am so so sorry for your loss. Matthew had actually reached out to me several years ago on Linkedin just to say hi and connect across the miles. I remember thinking it was so sweet of him. I remember Matthew as happy, kind, and generous and I enjoyed following his amazing career and accomplishments in sport. I too know the heartache and immeasurable pain of sudden loss having lost my husband in an avalanche in 2002 when our son was 2 years old. The grief never leaves, but somehow we find a path forward in their memory, and because that's what they would have wanted us to do. I wish you much peace in the days ahead and will remember Matthew fondly. --Much love, Lori Rissling Wynn (and Norma Jean and Susan).

Matt reached out to me on social media some years back. Not for any reason in particular beyond just being human and staying in touch. We knew each other from JH and always got on well. He just reached out to say hello!!!! The goodness runs deep with with this one. I am shocked at how busy he was and yet Matt is the type of person I would had wanted my kids to know, both as athletes and people. My heart really aches for your passing Matt and for all of your family and friends.

I first connected with Matt over email while he has working for the US team and I was working for the Australians. We were fellow Canadians working in the freestyle skiing industry. When we finally met in person we formed an instant friendship that carried us through many events and countries over 20 years. I loved catching up over too many red wines and hearing Matt’s amazing laugh. It was something I looked forward to at each event. During the course of our friendship there was one thing that was a constant. Every year without fail I would get a birthday message from him. My birthday is coming up in a few weeks and it will be a bittersweet day to not see his name pop up.
You are missed mc. A lot.

I went to elementary school with Matt in Guelph. We reconnected via social media some years ago and I was always in awe of his amazing journey and influence on others. My memories of Matt from elementary school were of a kind, funny, and genuinely compassionate person. One clear memory was dancing with Matt in the playground to "Abracadabra". HIs laugher was contagious. My heart breaks for his family and friends for this tragic loss.

As a fellow canuck working for the US Ski Team, I would enjoy Matt's outlandish humor and pranks! I was so proud in Vancouver during the 2010 Olympics when I got to invite Speedy Peterson up to award Matt with the Order of Ikkos for being a coach of a Olympic Medal winner. He gave so much to so many. He will be missed.

I knew Matt mostly as a fellow athlete when he was on the Canadian team. We first met as teens. And he was always kind. Always funny. Super talented. ~ I wish I'd seen him more after I retired from the ski team. ~ I have this memory--I think it may have been when he'd started coaching for the U.S. There were a few of us just returning from Europe. Our flights had been delayed, and our bags didn't show up. We were all so tired. Matt showed up where we were staying, and lent us his boxers and tees and sweats to sleep in. He just heard we'd arrived without bags. I remember feeling so cozy, being able to change into clean clothes. And thinking how kind he was to do that. No one asked for that, or even thought to. He just thought of it and us. He was so kind. ~ RIP, Matt. Thank you for being so wonderful.

My heart goes out to Matt's family and to those close to him.
He was so kind and humble and yet also crazy (the good crazy). That always felt contagious to me. I knew him in grade school in Guelph where I considered him my best friend, and then recently, thankfully, got connected again on the internet.
It is truly a huge shock and great, great sadness that such an amazing soul has passed.
The photo was from grade 4, the last year he and I were in the same class (he has a red shirt in the back row).

It’s not going to be the same without Matt. When he was in Santa Monica we always got together even if it was for a couple of hours. Sports was always a topic of our conversations but he was interested in my family, as I was in his. Full of energy and love for the outdoors. Thank you for introducing Cara to me and my wife. We are going to miss you and you will never be forgotten.

I’m really going to miss Matt, I had the pleasure & honor to work with him at Red Bull. I can honestly say that my skills as professional surfer wouldn’t be nearly what it is today without his help. Beyond coaching, Matt was a great friend and I always enjoyed hanging out. One thing I’ll miss most is his great sense of humor and doing trips with him around the world. Randomly and with zero planning, there would be times we would just so happen sit right next to one another flying back to Maui. I’d be coming from somewhere and he’d be coming from somewhere else. I would laugh the whole flight home!
Love ya Matt, miss you dearly.
Aloha

Lo he sentido muchísimo.
Un abrazo enorme

The world has lost an incredible human being. While we hadn’t seen each other in person since College Ave days, it was great to reconnect via Facebook over the last decade and then Zoom just recently.I remember being in awe of his stories and accomplishments when he shared some of what he’d been up to in the years between. He is - and will continue to be - deeply missed.
My heart goes out to Matt’s family and close friends.
