Matthew L. Deckard Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 21, 2005.
When Matthew L. Deckard came home from combat, he didn't like hitting the bars or running wild. He craved more simple, quiet pleasures. "He really wanted to just be a homebody. We had date nights, just me and him. We had movie nights with the kids," said his wife, Angela. "When he came home for R&R, or just any time he came home from work, he would just jump for joy that they were right there with him. It made his night, every night." Deckard, 29, of Elizabethtown, Ky., was killed Sept. 16 by a roadside bomb in Baghdad. He graduated from high school in 1994 and was assigned to Fort Stewart. Deckard loved to take his children fishing or to Georgia's beaches. Whenever their cars would break down, Deckard, who taught himself how to repair cars, insisted on fixing them himself. He also was a video game junkie, owning both a Playstation 2 and X-Box. Angela Deckard said her husband, a tank gunner and driver, joined the Army because "he just thought it'd be really cool to be on a tank." Deckard also is survived by his three children, 6-year-old Makayla, 5-year-old Noah and 3-year-old Austin.

Hey Matt,

Though it has been four years, it seems like only yesterday. As we visited your monument this morning we could feel your presence. As you know, so much has happened since that unforgettable day and over the past year, we know that you have had a hand in all the good that has come our way. John is here now as well as "Cap" and many of your other comrades. Though some have chose to forget and let memories of you slip silently into the night, you can be assured that we will never forget. We wish that you could have returned and followed thru with your plans. Man, the smile that we would have seen on your face! Anyways, bless you on this day and every day in the future. You are sadly missed but we know you are soaring high and forever free.
Always in our hearts and minds, never to be forgotten,we love you.

Hello,
I represent PRAYER SHAWLS 4 FALLEN SOLDIERS (PS4FS), an organization that since October 2007 has sent over 2,700 prayer shawls to military families who have lost a loved one. We are an organization of over 238 groups from all over the country. We make every effort to reach families even when post cards are returned after they have moved. Would you kindly send me a contact email/address so that we may send a prayer shawl to the family? Thank you!

September 16, 2008

Holding you all in my thoughts and prayers.

The Wind on The Downs

“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”

(Written by Marian Allen during World War l )

Two lines that I wish you to keep near your heart…….

“You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe”

I did not know Matthew, but I am remembering
his service. He is my hero. !

The Other Side

i'm over on the other side
where life and death softly divide.
left my skin and bones behind
now i'm over on the other side.

can you feel me there with you?
my breath is gone but i'm not through.
loved you then and i still do
from over on the other side.

i can fly. really fly.
below the earth ... all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

it's good here on the other side.
the sweetest songs...the bluest skies.
thank you for the tears you cried
but it's good here on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth...all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side

the world is smaller than a needle's eye.
where life and death softly divide.
when you leave your skin and bones behind
i'll be waiting on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth ... all through the sky.
go tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

I Love You Baby With All My Heart and Soul. Always and Forever Your Loving Wife...

August 16, 2007

There is nothing that I can say or do to take away the pain or bring you peace in your time of sorrow, but I will offer you and your family my heart felt condolences. I also offer you my prayers that in time the pain will easy and the memories of your HERO will carry you through each day and night. I want to thank your HERO, for his/her selfless act of becoming a member of the armed forces, his/her willingness to defend the United States of America, all that we hold sacred and for the sacrifice that will forever be etched in the memories of all those who knew him/her. Though tears can never bring him/her back, we hope that our tears express our gratitude for the sacrifice that he/she made and our sorrow at his/her passing. I believe for every fallen HERO there is a star shining brightly up above to remind us of the precious gift we were given.

Your mission on earth is complete and you are now a member of GOD’s Heavenly armed forces. Stand down brave warrior and take your rightful place in Heaven with all the HEROES who have passed before.

I made a special promise to LE RON A. WILSON, a dear family friend who joined the Army with three other friends, one of whom is my son (Le Ron was killed in action on 07/06/07 at the age of 18) on the day he was laid to rest as I touched his coffin, that I would never forget him nor would I forget those that gave their lives for our country before him, with him and after him and so when I came across www.legacy.com, I thought what a great way to keep my promise to Le Ron, so I will continue to leave tributes in each guest book until the day there is no longer the need to leave these tributes to a FALLEN HERO.

REST IN PEACE, HERO, YOU WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN!!

Dear Deckard Family,
Though I did not know your fallen hero, I found his bio and had to say thank you to you. I myself am an Army wife, I know what it feels like to send my loved one to be in harm's way. I know how it feel to wait for endless days, waiting for phone calls and emails, the sleep that won't come and the nightmares that do. On that part, I am your sister. I was lucky, my husband came home alright. I know it is not much that separate us. One road. One IED. One turn. Not much, really... Tears fill my eyes when I think of you, how you must feel. I have no words to tell you how my heart goes out to you. I want to tell you thank you. Thank you for those sleepless nights, those bad days where you didn't know where he was, what he was doing and then he would call and everything would be alright~ for a few days~ because if it hadn't been for you, he wouldn't have been able to be who he was, wouldn't have been able to be strong and brave. He wouldn't have had a reason. Thank you for loving him, without that, he might not have wanted to be the man he was, might not have been in the place he was, and he might not have bothered to be a hero. But he was. He couldn't have done that without you. You were his reason. You were his life. What a wonderful thing! Thank you to his parents~ Thank you for being such great teachers, thank you for listening to him, for being there, for scolding him when he needed it, for loving him when he was difficult, for grounding him when he needed that, and for loving him all the time. You taught him courage, you taught him greatness. You taught him to be the man he was, the good man, the great father, the strong soldier, and the loving husband. He was a reflection of your love. Be proud of yourself, he was such a reflection of goodness, that people who never knew him~ like me~ cry for him and for you~ what a thing that is! Tears flow down my cheeks as I think of you, dear hero's Mother... my son is a senior this year, he plans to enlist this summer, and I can't imagine your pain. I wish there were some way that I could wave a magic wand and make you whole again, but I can't, of course. I can only tell you that your son will be remembered as a hero. That you did a wonderful job as his mother, that you have a piece of him with you always in your heart, in your grandchildren, in your mirror too. I send you my heart, dear ladies, family of this fallen hero, his wife, his mother, his sisters, and I thank you for him. He was a hero. He was strong and brave, he made a difference. If not for you, he could not have been the strong light he was. Surely the world was a better place because he was in it and it is a little dimmer because he is not longer in it... I have no doubt he is in the Angel on your shoulder now, and he will be remembered by those who never knew him, like me, he gave all. In a world of few heroes, he was one. He was loved. That is apparent from your sweet words to him. I am so sorry for your loss. I send you sympathy from one military family to another, with my heart and my thanks...

Hey Matt,

A year has passed and it only feels like yesterday.

The saying, " You don't raise Heroes, you raise sons, and if you treat them like sons, they'll turn out to be Heroes" is the most appropriate quote that echoes through our minds on this anniversary of being notified of the sacrifice you made for all of us one year ago today.

We have, and will always, be proud of you.

The black butterfly with the blue tipped wings that appeared from nowhere, that circled each of us before floating away as we visited your final resting place yesterday will remain as yet another wonderful memory that we have been left with. We know that you were smiling as you looked down on us.

A loved one lives forever in the hearts of those that cared.

A loved one lives forever in the memories that were shared.

We all love and miss you so very much.

Angie, Makayla, Noah, and Austin,

I can not tell you how sorry I am that your husband and father never came home from Iraq with the rest of battalion. I know that you miss him alot. I also miss him and wish he was here. Your dad and husband was a good man. I will always remember him and consider him a friend. During the time I spent with your father at

4-64 I came to like him alot. He always talked about his family and he loved his soldiers. I will always cherish the time I got to spend with him. Mr. and Mrs. Gill you brought him up well and he brings great honor to you, Angie and his children. Be very proud of him and know that I and my fellow "Tuskers" will never forget him. Angie, if you ever need anything you know my family and I will always be there for you and the kids. Makayla, Noah, and Austin, your dad loved you and was very proud of you guys. When the time comes that you want to talk about your dad with someone besides your family let me know. Be good for your mother. Make your father proud. I am proud to have served with your dad. It will always be the greatest honor to me that I was able to escort him to his final resting place. You guys will always be in my thoughts and prayers.

Today is Christmas Matt and we know you are having a most wonderful Christmas in Heaven.

We know that if we could see you now,

we wouldn't shed a tear,

though we may not understand why you are no longer here.

We know that you have beheld our Fathers face

and you've touched our Saviors hand and all of the Heavens angels rejoiced as you entered the promised land.

We know that beyond the gates of pearl you've walked on the golden streets.

We know you've touched the walls of jasper and dipped your foot in the crystal sea.

We know the beauty is beyond words that nothing could compare,

and someday we'll meet you there.

Let Jesus be your guide because His Word will show you the way.

Please don't cry because we will meet again someday.

We Love and Miss you so much Matt.

I WAS SGT DECKARD'S INSTRUCTOR AT THE NCO ACADEMY AT FT STEWART.I REMEMBER SGT DECKARD AND THE REST OF HIS SQUAD QUITE WELL. I REMEMBER THEM ALL AS A "SPIRITED BUNCH". IN THOSE DAYS, INSTRUCTORS CARRIED WOODEN WALKING STICKS, TO USE IN THE FIELD.THAT SQUAD GAVE ME ONE THEY HAND CARVED AND ALL SIGNED AS A GIFT. Dear Matt,

You will always be my baby. My fondest memories of you are when you would place your chubby little hands on my face and give me a kiss and a hug.

You loved your Big Wheels Matt....going through three of them and a Green Machine. I would watch you peddle as fast as you could, those chubby little legs working as fast as they would, and then spinning out at the end of each run with the look of a thrilled child in your face. I should have known there was a reason you loved those things so much because when you grew up, you traded them for a bigger toy, a M-1 Tank.

I am so proud that you had grown into a fine young man. I will pass on the memories of your childhood to your children. Your wife Angie will pass on to your children the memories of your adulthood.

Matt, I can not tell you enough how much I miss you. I am also so proud that you grew up to be a wonderful husband, father and Hero. My heart breaks for the loss of you, but my memories will never fade.

I Love You,

Mom

We thought of you with love today
But that is nothing new.

We thought about you yesterday
And days before that too.

We think of you in silence
We often speak your name.

Now all we have are memories
And your picture in a frame.

Your memory is our keepsake
With which we'll never part

God has you in His keeping
We have you in our Heart.

Matt was my cousin's husband. He was a great man, there will never be another like him. His kids adored him and he them. I always thought the world of Matt, he was a good guy. He fit in with our family perfectly and it is truly a honor to say that he was part of my family. I don't think there were many people who knew him that didn't like him. As for me and my family we loved him and will surely miss him.

I came accross this poem the other day and I thought of you Matt...

If I knew it would be the last time

That I'd see you fall asleep,

I would tuck you in more tightly

and pray the Lord, your soul to keep

If I knew it would be the last time

that I see you walk out the door,

I would give you a hug a kiss

and call you back for one more.

If I knew it would be the last time

I'd hear your voice lifted up in praise,

I would video tape each action and word,

so I could play them back day after day

If I knew it would be the last time,

I could spare an extra minute

to stop and say "I love you,"

instead of assuming you would know I do

If I knew it would be the last time

I would be there to share your day,

Well I'm sure you'll have so many more,

so I can let just this one slip away

For surely there's always tomorrow

to make up for a oversight,

and we always get a second chance

to make everything just right

There will always be another chance

to say our "Anything I can do?"

But just in case I might be wrong,

and today is all I get,

I'd like to say how much I love you

and I hope we never forget

Tomorrow is not promised to anyone,

young or old alike,

And today may be the last chance

you get to hold your loved one tight

so if you're waiting for tomorrow,

why not do it today?

For if tomorrow never comes,

you'll surely regret the day

That you didn't take that extra time

for a smile, hug, or a kiss

and you were too busy to grant someone,

what turned out to be their one last wish

So hold your loved ones close today,

and whisper in their ear,

Tell them how much you love them

and that you'll always hold them dear

Take time to say "I'm sorry,"

"Please forgive me," "Thank you," or

"It's okay"

And if tomorrow never comes,

you'll have no regrets about today!

You will be missed by most and remembered by All!

I can not begin to tell you how sorry we are for the loss of your husband, Angie and your son Glenn & Cassie. We do want you to know how much we love you all and will continue to keep all of you in our prayers.

The sacrifice that you have been asked to pay for our freedom is tremendous. We are so honored by Matt's love for his country and willingness to serve and protect us all.

Thank you Matt, the greatest gift a man could do is to lay down his life for friends or family and that you have done. We are truly honored to have you for our great-nephew and will look forward to the day of our reunion in heaven.

God bless you Angie in the days, weeks and months ahead.

Even though we have never met, I wanted to share a poem with you.
You see I lost my only son when he was one month away from his 22nd birthday. That was in 1980. I know the pain and the sorrow that you feel.
I know in time the awful hurting inside of you will heal. I know right now it’s hard to Imagine that life can even go on. I can’t imagine anything worse then losing a child.

I am a Christian and I know that God’s strength saw me and my husband through. There were many days we just didn’t want to go on, but He was always there to help us.

I hope you will not take offence by receiving this. I only mean it to help and
let you know that I care. I will keep you in my prayers.

May God bless you in a very special way, as He took a very special person from this world to be with Him. I thank God every day for men like your son who are willing to fight for our freedom and the freedom of oppressed nations. I know Matthew has made a difference in every life he has touched.

Remember, John 3:16 says “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should nor perish but have everlasting life.”

At Death of a Child
“I’ll lend you for a little while
A child of mine,” He said.
“For you to love the while he lives
And mourn when he is dead.
It may be six or seven years, or
Twenty two or three,
But will you ’til I call him back,
Take care of him for Me?
He’ll bring his charms to gladden you,
And should his days be brief,
You’ll have his lovely memories
As solace for your grief.
I cannot promise he will stay,
Since all from earth return,
But there are lessons taught down there
I want this child to learn.
I’ve looked this wide world over
In my search for teachers true,
And from the throngs that crowd life’s lane,
I have selected you.
Now will you give all your love,
Nor think the labor vain,
Nor hate me when I come to call
To take him back again?”

I fancy that I heard them say,
“Dear Lord, Thy will be done.
For all the joy this child shall bring,
The risk of grief we’ll run;
We’ll shelter him with tenderness,
We’ll love him while we may,
And for the happiness we’ve known
Forever grateful stay.
But should the angels call for him,
Much sooner then we’ve planned,
We’ll brave the bitter grief that comes
And try to understand.”
