Matthew Sedgley Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jul. 15, 2025.
Matthew William Sedgley passed away of heart failure on July 3, 2025, in Alexandria, Virginia, at the age of 63.

Born on March 24, 1962, Matthew was a gifted musician whose passion for rhythm and performance left a lasting mark on the Washington, D.C. music scene. As the drummer for The Grandsons for over three decades, he brought energy and dedication to every performance, helping to define the band's sound and contributing to its enduring presence in the region. The band went on to win 15 WAMMIES among other awards and honors.

Matthew is survived by his siblings Maureen, Melinda, and Michael, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

A musical memorial for Matthew is being planned by his family, friends and beloved Grandsons bandmates Alan MacEwan and Chris Watling for August, after his cremation and funeral Mass on July 16th at 10:30 a.m. at Good Shepherd Catholic Church.

I'm really grateful that I got play alongside Matt a handful of times, and he was great fun to be around, a genuine and genuinely friendly person. Thanks to Alan, Chris, Eric, John and any other Grandsons for the chance to meet and get to know Matt, and getting to play music with all of you.

Tommy and I are very sorry for your loss. We enjoyed Matt´s friendship since he joined the Grandsons and have appreciated hearing him
play at Dietle´s for the past several years. He will be missed; may his memory be eternal.

DC swing dancers have known and enjoyed Matt's drumming for years. Our hearts break for all our Grandsons friends. We share your sadness and are fortunate to have known him. May his memory be a blessing.

Beyond being a friend and colleague, Matt was a great person to ride to a performance with. There was always something to talk about, whether it was music or what was going on with either of us, or complaints about the state of the universe and its indignities. Matt was a steady presence in my life and I will miss him in ways haven´t yet realized.
